 **FEBRUARY BOARD SERIES RECAP**

The following is a summary of some noteworthy actions taken by the IEEE Board of Directors at the February Board Series meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Board of Directors

approved the establishment of a legal and physical presence for IEEE in China, authorizing immediate implementation of the business plan presented;

approved New Jersey as the location for each November IEEE Meeting Series, beginning in 2009.  (The Board had previously approved New Jersey as the location for the November 2008 meeting.);

approved funding for a workshop on the future of the IEEE History Center to be convened no later than 15 May 2006. The workshop will examine the mission/vision, roles, functions, staffing, structure, organization, funding, reporting and oversight of the IEEE History Center and the IEEE Virtual Museum;

endorsed the objectives presented by the Educational Activities Board in the area of accreditation and approved the out of cycle new initiative “Global IEEE Leadership in Accreditation.” The goal of this initiative is to establish global leadership of IEEE in accreditation by positioning IEEE as an accrediting body, a founder of new accrediting bodies and the first source of choice for reliable information on engineering accreditation worldwide.

**CALL FOR 2006 EDUCATION AWARD NOMINATIONS**

The Educational Activities Board is seeking nominations for seven awards that recognize IEEE members, pre-university educators and employers of members who have made noteworthy contributions to education. The deadline for nominations is 30 April.  For award descriptions, honorarium details and nomination packets go to http://www.ieee.org/web/education/EABAwards/calls.html.

**IEEE ANNUAL ELECTION GUIDELINES**

When publishing IEEE annual election information, consult http://www.ieee.org/elections for the most accurate and up-to-date information on all candidates, as well as election categories and procedures. As a reminder, candidates in the same election category should be given equal opportunities.  For more information, contact IEEE election staff at corp-election@ieee.org.

 **ACCESS LIST OF SOCIETY CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS ONLINE**

A list of IEEE Technical Society and Council continuing education programs can be accessed via the Educational Activities’ Society Education web page, http://www.ieee.org/portal/pages/education/societyeducation/societyed.html. Site visitors can quickly browse the catalog of courses and tutorials by subject area and download online tutorials.

**TWO NEW IEEE JOURNALS DEBUT**

The first issues of “IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine” and “IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security” have been published and are now available online through the IEEE Xplore digital library.

Users can access full text of the articles through  "IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security"   http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/tocresult.jsp?isnumber=33588; "IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine"  http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/tocresult.jsp isnumber=33585.

*DATA PROJECTOR RENTALS AVAILABLE THROUGH MEETING PLANNING SERVICES*

Meeting Planning services offers data projector rentals at a fee of US$150 each. This is a flat cost – not a per-day rate.  This is an alternative to renting equipment onsite at meeting venues.  The fee will be used to cover maintenance and any replacement parts that may be needed. Those interested in using the Data Projector Lending Program can complete the online reservation form at http://www.ieee.org/portal/pages/services/mps/dplp/requests/index.html.

**IN THE NEWS**

The IEEE, its members and its products and services are mentioned frequently in journalists’ reports on technology and the engineering profession. Here are just a few recent references.

2 March – THE NEW YORK TIMES –  In an op-ed piece, Glenn Zorpette, executive editor of IEEE Spectrum, discussed the slow process of restoring electrical power to Iraq, based on his experiences as a reporter who was embedded with engineers trying to rebuild the country’s power grid. He concluded that “every day average Iraqis lack electrical power is a day the insurgents gain political power.” Zorpette also discussed his experiences on a 10 Feb. edition of “Talk of the Nation: Science Friday” on (U.S.) National Public Radio. To listen, go to: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5200528&ft=1&f=5

3 Feb. – CBS EVENING NEWS – Ralph W. Wyndrum Jr., 2006 IEEE-USA President, provided input for a segment about U.S. President George Bush’s American Competitiveness Initiative. Wyndrum supported the initiative’s emphasis on better preparing teachers in math and science, and hiring scientists and engineers to teach those subjects. He also gave several examples of U.S. IEEE members and others volunteering in schools.  Wyndrum also appeared on NPR’s “Science Friday” 24 Feb. program as part of a panel on U.S. innovation leadership.

27 Jan. – INDIA ABROAD (circ: 66,855) – The New York City-based publication reported that 31 engineers of South Asian origins and currently working in the U.S., Canada and South America were elected members of the 2006 IEEE Class of Fellows. The article listed the 31 new IEEE Fellows and their Fellow citations, noting they are among 271 Senior Members named to Fellow grade for this year.

Feb. – The 2006 IEEE Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), held early last month in San Francisco, has been generating considerable national and international publicity thanks to an abundance of notable papers and product announcements. ELECTRONICSWEEKLY.COM (www.electronicsweekly.co.uk), which described ISSCC as “probably the world’s top chip design conference,” reported on a 20nWpower source using micromachining and a radioisotope with a half-life of 100 years developed by researchers at Cornell University.

It also covered Sony’s introduction of an ultra-wideband transceiver chip that supports distributed control of up to 64 terminals in an ad-hoc self-configuring network. Other publications covering the conference included INFORMATION WEEK, ZDNETINDIA.COM, TRN RESEARCH NEWS ROUNDUP, TECHWEB, and NEWS.COM. ISSCC is sponsored by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society.
