**VOLUNTEERS ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2008 IEEE ERIC HERZ OUTSTANDING STAFF MEMBER AWARD**

Nominations are being sought for the 2008 IEEE Eric Herz Outstanding Staff Member Award.  The award is presented for demonstrated contributions to the goals, objectives, and success of the IEEE to a present or past IEEE staff member with at least 10 years of service.

Any IEEE volunteer may submit nominations. IEEE Staff, IEEE Awards Board, IEEE Board of Directors, and the Herz Award selection committee are not eligible to nominate or endorse candidates for this award.

In the evaluation process, the following criteria are considered: substantial impact on the goals and objectives of the IEEE while a staff member, substantial impact on the success of a number of IEEE initiatives, and leadership in a number of staff activities.

The prize consists of a certificate, honorarium, and travel expenses to attend the presentation of the award at the last IEEE Board of Directors Meeting of the year.

**EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERS FREE ONLINE COURSE CONTAINING TACTICS FOR WORKING WITH THE PRE-UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY**

IEEE Educational Activities, a partner in the National Academy of Engineering’s Engineering Equity Extension Service, has developed a 30 minute online course that provides assistance and support for IEEE members interested in working with the pre-university community. Developed under a grant sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the course is available for free to IEEE members.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • discuss goals and needs associated with engineering outreach to pre-university students;
  • demonstrate an understanding of ideas for giving an effective outreach presentation;
  • effectively work with pre-university schools and teachers.

Extra features within the online course include a transcript, a handout of a sample activity, and a resources section. Access and take the course online. For more information contact Yvonne Pelham, Educational Activities, at y.pelham@ieee.org or +1 732 562 5321.

**APPLICATION DEADLINE NEARS FOR DEVELOPMENT GRANTS FOR PBS DESIGN SQUAD OUTREACH PROGRAMS**

 Grants are now available to support the implementation of outreach programs associated with the  PBS  television series Design Squad, a reality show that follows two teams of students working together to solve different engineering challenges. IEEE is one of several organizations that provide funding for Design Squad, which will begin airing its second season in April 2008. The application deadline has been extended to Friday, 14 December 2007.

The grants must be used to conduct training workshops for engineers and/or educators associated with Design Squad programs. Grants will be administered by the American Society of Civil Engineers in partnership with IEEE, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the EWeek Foundation, and the Society of Women Engineers. Learn more about Design Squad at the Design Squad Web site or download the application for a grant at the ASCE Web site. For specific questions concerning the grants, contact Lisa J. Jennings, senior manager, diversity and pre-college outreach at ASCE at +1 703 295 6405.

**IEEE XPLORE® UPGRADES INCLUDE NEW RESEARCH TOOLS**

IEEE recently released several new research options for its IEEE Xplore online delivery platform, which powers IEEE online subscriptions for organizations and individuals. New features available through IEEE Xplore 2.4.2 include: Citation (Known Item) Search – allowing for the quick retrieval of documents by commonly used citation information; tabbed search results – providing users with a more efficient reorganization of search results; RefWorks/BibTeX citation download –providing researchers two additional widely used citation formats; improved author search and Expert Now subscriptions for institutions.

Additionally, this release includes test features including application notes, which consolidates practical and applied content for working engineers and technology surveys – which provides expert summaries of two leading edge technologies with links to key papers in the field. For full information on these and other features, visit IEEE Xplore.

**IEEE FOUNDATION GRANTS AWARDED DURING 2007 TOP US$275,000**

During its November 2007 meeting, the IEEE Foundation awarded six new project grants totaling US$116,240.  Expected to impact people around the world, the goals of these projects include; expanding TryEngineering.org to two new languages; finding technological solutions to humanitarian challenges; fostering a love of science; developing collaborative learning models in China and Hong Kong; encouraging students to consider careers in engineering; and promoting research into the history of the development of communication technologies.

With the awarding of these six new project grants, the IEEE Foundation has committed more than US$275,000 during 2007 to new and innovative projects that seek to improve technological literacy.  To learn more about these and the other grants during 2007 visit the IEEE Foundation Web site
