**ABET ACCREDITATION CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES NOW AVAILABLE IN SPANISH**

The IEEE recently teamed with ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology, to  provide  2006-2007 accreditation criteria and procedures in Spanish. The translated documents are now available online. ABET, Inc. is a federation of 28 professional and technical societies.

IEEE commissioned the translations, oversaw the work and collaborated on the project with the Instituto de la Calidad en la Acreditacion de Carreras de Ingenieria y Tecnolgogia (ICACIT), a university-level Peruvian accrediting body in the process of being established and chartered.  IEEE will have the translated documents updated when ABET updates the originals to ensure the most current information is available to individuals working on accreditation in Central and South America.

The translated ABET criteria and procedures were used during a 2006 IEEE workshop held for educators and practitioners on education in Lima, Peru.

The project was supported by the Educational Activities Board and the IEEE Peru Section. For access to the translated documents, visit  http://dfl.ece.drexel.edu/icacit/index.php?PAGE=DOCUMENTS, or for more information on ICACIT visit  http://dfl.ece.drexel.edu/icacit/.

9 December – COMPUTER WORLD, MACROWORLD INVESTOR, INFOWORLD – Several international online publications reported the vote of the IEEE 802.3 Higher Speed Study Group to target 100 GB as the next speed of Ethernet technology. The 100 GB version of Ethernet will be 10 times faster than the current fastest type, 10 GB, the article states. A study group was formed in July to decide what speed IEEE should try to achieve in the next standard. The story reported that the next step is for IEEE to approve the formation of a working group to determine a solution. To read the full article, visit http://www.infoworld.com/archives/emailPrint.jsp?R=printThis&A=/article/06/11/22/HN100gbits_1.html.

20 December – PC WORLD.COM – The IEEE 802.11n (Wi-Fi) draft standard was highlighted in an article previewing the 40th annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that will take place 8-11 January, 2007 in Las Vegas. The article, which summarized key companies introducing home networking products, states “Leading the pack will be a host of routers and adapters designed to capitalize on (and improve upon) the draft 802.11n standard….  802.11n delivers data rates as high as 540 Mbits/s at peak (and 200 Mbits/s sustained), which is ten times that of the current high-speed standard, 802.11g. With that much speed, vendors are betting that consumers are willing to take a flyer on the technology, even if the standard isn't fully cooked yet.”  To read the full story, visit http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2075114,00.asp. The IEEE 802.11n standard has been the subject of many articles in such publications as EE Times, Networking News, ZDNET, ComputerWorld Austalia, ExtremeTech and Wireless Week.
