**IEEE 2006 ANNUAL REPORT NOW AVAILABLE**

The sense of connection that the IEEE fosters among members is the theme of the 2006 IEEE Annual Report. Titled “Interconnected,” it was mailed last month to corporate, education and government leaders around the world, and to IEEE volunteers and staff. Also, for the first time, the report was sent digitally to IEEE members. A special email alert enabled them to either view the Annual Report in their browsers or to download the PDF version.(PDF, 3,468 KB)

**QUICK FACTS:  A RESOURCE TO ENSURE CONSISTENT MESSAGING IN IEEE MATERIALS/PRESENTATIONS**

In an effort to improve the consistency of our messaging, a list of quick facts about the IEEE is published online as a resource for use in presentations and written materials.  Based on year-end numbers, the list includes total membership (rounded), sections, chapters, student branches, societies and technical councils, publications, conferences and active IEEE standards. When using this information, it is important to note that it reflects data as of 31 December of the previous year.

The IEEE quick facts can be found at http://www.ieee.org/web/aboutus/home/index.html (bottom of the page). The link is also located in the left navigation area on the Volunteer Resources Web page.

Volunteers are encouraged to direct others who speak or write about the IEEE to this information.

For more information, contact Corporate Communications at corporate-communications@ieee.org.

**IEEE SEEKS PARTICIPANTS AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE TO DISCUSS STRATEGIES FOR MEETING THE DEMAND FOR FUTURE ENGINEERS AND EDUCATORS**

IEEE, in cooperation with Verband der Elektrotechnik (VDE) and several international professional organizations, is looking for individuals to participate in the first of its kind IEEE international conference that will bring together members of industry, academia and government to discuss and offer solutions regarding the future of engineering education and the profession.

The conference, “Meeting the Growing Demand for Engineers and Their Educators 2010-2020,” to be held 9-11 November in Munich, Germany, encourages attendees to collaborate and offer solutions that will be presented in an action plan on the final day. The meeting will feature four keynote addresses, 12 moderated paper discussion sessions and three breakout sessions, and is designed to open communication channels among the participating organizations. For a full list of sponsors and additional information about the conference, visit the conference Web page. Individuals can also register online. For additional details, contact Jessica Czeczuga, Educational Activities, at j.czeczuga@ieee.org or +1 732 562 5496.

**SIZE REQUIREMENTS FOR IEEE MASTER BRAND USE ON WEB PAGES CLARIFIED IN IEEE IDENTITY STANDARDS**

To make it easier for staff and volunteers to make sure they are adhering to the IEEE Identity Standards, requirements for using the IEEE Master Brand on ieee.org, as well as other IEEE Web pages, have been clarified. They are as follows:

  • Minimum size: 100 pixels wide by 33 pixels high
  • Resolution 800 x 600 pixels

Additionally the IEEE Master Brand:

  • must appear in the header within the top third of the screen view;
  • must be at least as large or larger than other logos used on any Web page where the IEEE Master Brand appears*;
  • must not be incorporated into background or wallpaper treatments.

*An exception to the second rule is the logo that appears in the upper left hand corner of the site as the site identifier. The logo or name of the site should appear larger in size than the IEEE Master Brand to avoid confusion as to which site the visitor is on.

This clarification has been incorporated into the IEEE Identity Standards.  For any questions regarding proper use of the IEEE Master Brand, contact Corporate Strategy and Communications at corporate-communications@ieee.org.

**IEEE LAUNCHES INTERNET TELEVISION**

IEEE officially launched IEEE.tv, an Internet-based television network featuring targeted programming on technology and engineering produced by IEEE members, on 27 September. First launched as a Beta site in August 2006, IEEE.tv includes programs available to the general public, and others that can only be viewed by IEEE members.

Improved features include “flash” video format, a list of “most viewed” and “recently added” videos and different options for RSS feeds, enabling Internet syndication. Additional features available only to IEEE members include downloadable videos and personalization options.

In 2007, IEEE appointed the IEEE.tv Advisory Group to provide strategic oversight and guidance for product development. The Group includes:

  • Charles Dages, executive vice president, emerging technology, Warner Bros.
  • David Green, associate professor, electrical and computer engineering, UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham); IEEE Treasurer
  • Tom Gurley, independent broadcasting consultant; past-President IEEE Broadcast Technology Society
  • William Hayes, director of engineering and technology, Iowa Public Television; president, IEEE Broadcast Technology Society
  • Cecelia Jankowski, managing director, IEEE Regional Activities
  • Lisa Lazareck, Ph.D. Candidate, University of Oxford, United Kingdom; IEEE GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) volunteer, co-host of Discovery Channel program Zapped

**DISCOUNT OFFERED ON WORKSHOP COVERING IEEE 802 WIRELESS STANDARDS AT IEEE GLOBECOM**

The IEEE Educational Activities Board in cooperation with the IEEE Standards Association is presenting a first of its kind standards education workshop. Through this workshop, attendees can learn about the important role IEEE 802 Wireless Standards play in manufacturing and production processes. In association with IEEE GLOBECOM, the workshop is scheduled to take place 30 November to 1 December 2007 in Washington, DC.

The workshop will feature a comprehensive panel discussion on standards history and the standards development process.  IEEE Members save $150 (USD) on registration and IEEE GLOBECOM attendees save an additional $50 (USD). IEEE Student Members are encouraged to attend and are offered a significantly reduced registration fee where they save $400 (USD).

Individuals can view the preliminary program and list of speakers, visit and register online.

**CHANGES TO SECTION 7 OF THE IEEE FINANCIAL OPERATIONS MANUAL APPROVED**

During the June 2007 meeting the IEEE Board of Directors approved an update to IEEE Financial Operations Manual Section FOM.7 Fundraising: Grants and Contributions.  Effective with this update, all grant proposals are to be submitted through the IEEE Development Office, who will be responsible for reviewing the material for completeness, compliance with funding agency’s requirements, and consistency with the IEEE mission, as well as obtaining approval based upon the following:

Volunteer/Staff Function Grant Proposal Approval Limits
Development & Grants Officer less than US$25,000
Member, Management Council less than US$100,000
Staff Executive -- Business Administration less than US$250,000
IEEE Executive Committee/Alternative Executive Committee Approval =US$250,000

This update also requires that all grants and/or cooperative agreements received by an IEEE organizational unit be forwarded to the IEEE Development Office for processing, administration, and record retention. The updated IEEE Financial Operations Manual is available on the web. For questions or further clarification, contact Karen Galuchie, IEEE Development & Grants Officer, at k.galuchie@ieee.org or +1 732 562 3860.
