1. THE DANGERS OF FAULTY WIRING IN AGING AIRCRAFT
As today's military and commercial aircraft age past their teen years, miles of wiring buried deep within their structures begin to crack and fray. Faulty wiring has been blamed for a number of airline tragedies, including SwissAir 111 and TWA 800, and is also a concern for the space shuttle, nuclear power plants, subways and railroads. A recent U.S. Government report carries strong recommendations for tackling this looming problem. The most promising technological solutions are arc-fault circuit breakers and advanced fire suppression devices; advanced reflectometry methods for routine maintenance; and "smart wire" systems that constantly monitor the wiring status. 2. DRAM DESIGN MADE ACCESSIBLE
More dynamic random access memory (DRAM) circuits are manufactured than any other integrated circuit (IC) in production today, with annual sales in excess of US$25 billion. 3. SIA REPORTS - CHIP SALES IN NOVEMBER INCREASE MORE THAN 28% OVER NOVEMBER 1999
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) recently reported that worldwide sales of semiconductors were up $18.28 billion in November 2000, an increase of 28.4% over $14.24 billion a year ago, today. George Scalise, president of the SIA said industry sales increases could reach $205 billion in 2000 marking the first time annual industry sales will exceed $200 billion. The increase in sales was evident worldwide. Communications and Internet infrastructure markets experienced the most profound growth in demand. The Japanese market grew 38.9% and the Asia/Pacific market 20.9%. The Americas market rose 30% and the European market 24.1%. More information about the SIA can be found at http://www.semichips.org
