DISTINGUISHED LECTURER PRESENTATIONS AVAILABLE FREE
ON WEB
Under a new pilot program designed to make its Distinguished
Lecturer program accessible to all society members, the IEEE
Circuits & Systems Society (CAS) has made selected lectures
available for download from its Web site. Current presentations are
from Prof. Gabor Temes, Oregon State University, and Dr.
Chung-Sheng Li, IBM Watson Research Center. The catalog of lectures
will be expanded in the future. For system requirements and to view
the available lectures, visit: www.ieee-cas.org/dlp-electronic.php

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INTRODUCES 1GHz DSP
Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has recently unveiled what it believes
to be the world's fastest digital signal processor (DSP), clocking
in at 1GHz. This new processor comes on the heels of TI's 720-MHz
version, introduced this winter. TI believes this new DSP will have
immediate applications in real-time technology such as cellular
base stations and digital audio and video encoding. Read more at:

IEEE WOMEN IN ENGINEERING PHOTO CONTEST DEADLINE
EXTENDED
Members of IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) are encouraged to submit
inspirational photos of WIE members working on an
electrical/engineering project out in the field or in the lab to
the WIE Photo Contest. The contest deadline has been extended to 1
June 2003. For information on prizes and how to submit, visit: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/committee/women/

PROCEEDINGS OF 2003 SOUTHWEST SYMPOSIUM
RELEASED
Topics ranging from mixed-signal computer-aided design and
synthesis and data converters provided the focus of the 2003
Southwest Symposium on Mixed-Signal Design held in Las Vegas this
past February. Other covered topics included power distribution,
phase-locked/delay-locked loops and CMOS analog design The newly
released proceedings of this symposium are available from the IEEE
Online Catalog & Store at: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=EX663

5. NEW MORTGAGE SERVICES OFFERED THROUGH IEEE
FINANCIAL ADVANTAGE PROGRAM
The IEEE Financial Advantage Program (FAP) now offers a new
mortgage program that provides competitive mortgage rates. This
service is offered to IEEE members at a discounted rate and
includes a variety of loan options, fast loan approval and
professional guidance offered to each member. This program is being
offered in conjunction with Wachovia Corporate Mortgage Services
and is available to all members inside the United States. For more
details this and other FAP services, go to: www.ieee.org/fap

COPYRIGHT WARS: IEEE SPECTRUM REPORTS
A brave new world of digital entertainment awaits, but as IEEE
Spectrum magazine reports, this future risks being stalled by the
lack of consensus on digital copyright control. The consumer
electronics industry wants abundant content to be readily and
cheaply available to drive the sale of new products; the
entertainment industry, meanwhile, wants fair remuneration for the
use of that content. These potentially contradictory goals are
leading to heated battles. Read more about the war:

IEEE-SA LAUNCHES WEB SITE FOR EUROPEAN STANDARDS
COMMUNITY
The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) has just launched a web
portal for the European standards community, StandardsEurope.
The portal supports those who want to learn about, participate in
and access technical standards, especially in the fields of IT,
telecommunications, and power and energy. It also serves the needs
of IEEE-SA volunteers who help create standards, as well as IEEE-SA
members, customers and international partners. Visit: www.standardseurope.net

NETWORKING: GETTING TO KNOW YOU
Partly because of today's prevalent use of email and our increased
mobility, many modern professionals lack the skills necessary to
handle the challenges associated with traditional, face-to-face
networking. Part finesse, part discretion and part basic manners,
networking is a critical skill for all engineers. In the latest
edition of IEEE-USA Today's Engineer: www.todaysengineer.org/April03/networking.asp

IBM UNVEILS SUPER FAST UNIX OVERHAUL
IBM Corporation is said to have on the launch pad a 65-percent
faster version of its top-end UNIX server, set to launch this
month. The overhauled p690 UNIX system includes an upgrade from a
1.3Ghz to a 1.7GHz processor and may allow customers to later rent
additional processing power as needed. Read more at: news.com.com/2100-1010_3-999873.html
10. 2003 ICCAD TO BE HELD IN SAN JOSE
The 2003 IEEE International Conference on Computer Aided Design
(ICCAD) will be held in San Jose, California, USA this November.
Founded in 1982, ICCAD began as an exploration of new Electronic
Design Automation (EDA) tools and approaches in circuit design.
2003 marks the 21st annual conference. The event is scheduled for 9
to 13 November. Find out more, or register to attend, at: www.iccad.com/techprog.html
11. NEW IEEE PRESS VOLUME EXPLORES
MIXED-SIGNAL CIRCUITS
Mixed-signal circuit design allowing analog signals to be processed
in a digital system is a primary focus in the field of chip and
circuit design. Andrzej Handkiewicz' new Wiley-IEEE Press book,
"Mixed-Signal Systems: A Guide to CMOS Circuit Design," offers a
comprehensive guide to complementary metal oxide semiconductor
(CMOS) technology from the author of more than 100 technical
articles in the field. Find out more, or purchase at: www.wiley.com/remtitleinternational.cgi?isbn=0471228532

12. FUEL CELL RESEARCH MOVING 'AT LIGHT
SPEED'
Rising oil prices have put energy-saving technologies back onto the
front burner. Many are pushing hard for fuel cell development,
which could reduce both gasoline consumption and vehicle pollution.
Will the latest push actually make fuel cells real options for
consumers? In the latest edition of IEEE-USA Today's Engineer: www.todaysengineer.org/April03/fuel_cell.asp
