INDUSTRY ANALYST PREDICTS DECLINE IN NEED FOR CHIP
MAKERS
Dataquest analyst Jim Tully predicts the world will not need nearly
the number of chip vendors in the future. Tully points to a series
of factors in his analysis, including growing trends in vendors
dealing in intellectual property, growing hardware networks
replacing the "killer app" mentality and industry trend toward
"fabless chip manufacturing." Read more at www.eetimes.com/story/OEG20020531S0053
2.
IEEE P473 WORKING GROUP CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS
The IEEE-SA Standards Board recently approved revision of the IEEE
Recommended Practice for an Electromagnetic Site Survey (10 kHz to
10 GHz), leading to the IEEE P473 call for volunteers. IEEE
Standard 473(TM) describes a systematic approach for performing an
electromagnetic (EM) site survey, commencing from preparation of
the planning of the test until completion, data analysis and
documentation of the measurement results. For more information: standards.ieee.org/announcements/p473call.html

CAS SOCIETY OFFERS FREE SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP TO
ACTIVE IEEE MEMBERS
The IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CAS) is offering free 2002
society memberships to current IEEE members. Included in CAS
membership is a subscription to the quarterly Circuits and Systems
Magazine. This offer is available only to active 2002 IEEE members
and expires 1 August 2002. To find out more, visit www.ieee-cas.org
STUDENTS ALSO OFFERED FREE 2002 MEMBERSHIP: IEEE CAS is currently offering free 2002 student membership to both IEEE and the CAS society. IEEE PIONEERS "BLACK BOX FOR CARS" STANDARD
In an effort to enhance vehicle and highway safety, the IEEE has
begun work on standards project IEEE P1616 "Motor Vehicle Event
Data Recorders." Sponsored by the IEEE Vehicular Technology
Society, the standard is intended to address the lack of uniform,
scientific, motor vehicle crash data. Possible data elements to be
recorded include date, heading, location, number of occupants,
seat-belt usage, time and velocity. The World Health Organization
(WHO) predicts that motor vehicle crashes will be the third major
cause of injury and death by 2020. For more information, visit: grouper.ieee.org/groups/1616/home.htm

LOW POWER, COOLER AND LIGHTER DESIGNS FOCUS OF
ISLPED 2002
The Monterey Beach Hotel in Monterey, CA, USA will host the 2002
International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design
(ISLPED) 12 to 14 August. ISLPED presents recent advances in all
aspects of low power design and technologies, ranging from process
and circuit technologies, to simulation and synthesis tools, to
system level design and optimization. To register:
http://www.ee.ucla.edu/~islped/ Don't miss the next conference you
need for your career. IEEE sponsors more than 300 technical
conferences and workshops each year, highlighting the latest
technological advances. Find events through the IEEE

AVOIDING POTHOLES ON THE ROAD TO RETIREMENT
The recent financial woes of mega corporations like Enron and
Polaroid have yielded painful lessons for employers, stockholders
and employees. IEEE-USA Technology Policy Editor George McClure
tells us how we can learn from their mistakes and take steps to
ensure a more financially secure retirement. In the May-June issue
of IEEE-USA Today's Engineer. www.todaysengineer.org/May02/potholes.htm

12. CHECKING THE PLAY IN PLUG-AND-PLAY: AN
IEEE SPECTRUM SPECIAL FEATURE
To speed up design, multiple predesigned circuit blocks are often
used in the same system-on-chip (SOC) assembly, but this creates a
challenge in knowing if these various blocks will work together.
Describing how a chip's logic ought to work ensures that a SOC's
building blocks work in harmony, but how do designers do that when
they don't know enough about the inner workings of the intellectual
property blocks in their systems? IEEE Spectrum magazine examines
assertions-based verification, a software technique that may offer
a solution.
