1. INDUSTRY ANALYST PREDICTS DECLINE IN NEED FOR CHIP MAKERS
Dataquest analyst Jim Tully predicts the world will not need nearly the number of chip vendors in the future. Tully points to a series of factors in his analysis, including growing trends in vendors dealing in intellectual property, growing hardware networks replacing the "killer app" mentality and industry trend toward "fabless chip manufacturing." 2. IEEE P473 WORKING GROUP CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS
The IEEE-SA Standards Board recently approved revision of the IEEE Recommended Practice for an Electromagnetic Site Survey (10 kHz to 10 GHz), leading to the IEEE P473 call for volunteers. IEEE Standard 473(TM) describes a systematic approach for performing an electromagnetic (EM) site survey, commencing from preparation of the planning of the test until completion, data analysis and documentation of the measurement results. For more information: standards.ieee.org/announcements/p473call.html

3. CAS SOCIETY OFFERS FREE SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP TO ACTIVE IEEE MEMBERS
The IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CAS) is offering free 2002 society memberships to current IEEE members. Included in CAS membership is a subscription to the quarterly Circuits and Systems Magazine. This offer is available only to active 2002 IEEE members and expires 1 August 2002. To find out more, visit www.ieee-cas.org

STUDENTS ALSO OFFERED FREE 2002 MEMBERSHIP: IEEE CAS is currently offering free 2002 student membership to both IEEE and the CAS society. This offer is open to full-time graduate or senior undergraduate students who are first-time applicants to IEEE and the CAS society. This offer also expires 1 August 2002. To find out more, visit: www.ieee-cas.org

4. IEEE PIONEERS "BLACK BOX FOR CARS" STANDARD
In an effort to enhance vehicle and highway safety, the IEEE has begun work on standards project IEEE P1616 "Motor Vehicle Event Data Recorders." Sponsored by the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, the standard is intended to address the lack of uniform, scientific, motor vehicle crash data. Possible data elements to be recorded include date, heading, location, number of occupants, seat-belt usage, time and velocity. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that motor vehicle crashes will be the third major cause of injury and death by 2020. For more information, visit: grouper.ieee.org/groups/1616/home.htm

5. LOW POWER, COOLER AND LIGHTER DESIGNS FOCUS OF ISLPED 2002
The Monterey Beach Hotel in Monterey, CA, USA will host the 2002 International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design (ISLPED) 12 to 14 August. ISLPED presents recent advances in all aspects of low power design and technologies, ranging from process and circuit technologies, to simulation and synthesis tools, to system level design and optimization. To register: http://www.ee.ucla.edu/~islped/ Don't miss the next conference you need for your career. IEEE sponsors more than 300 technical conferences and workshops each year, highlighting the latest technological advances. Find events through the IEEE ConferenceSearch Web site at: www.ieee.org/conferencesearch/

6. MEMBER DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE FOR HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL ONLINE COURSES
Thirteen courses in leadership, management and strategy are being offered by Harvard Business School Publishing at a 10% discount to IEEE members. The one- to two-hour courses use Harvard Business Review articles, interactive case studies and feedback from instructors to help students build their expertise. IEEE members must enter through IEEE Educational Activities to obtain the discount. www.ieee.org/organizations/eab/verify/hbsp/verify.htm

7. AVOIDING POTHOLES ON THE ROAD TO RETIREMENT
The recent financial woes of mega corporations like Enron and Polaroid have yielded painful lessons for employers, stockholders and employees. IEEE-USA Technology Policy Editor George McClure tells us how we can learn from their mistakes and take steps to ensure a more financially secure retirement. In the May-June issue of IEEE-USA Today's Engineer. www.todaysengineer.org/May02/potholes.htm

8. JOURNAL OF SOLID-STATE CIRCUITS NOW AVAILABLE ON CD
A new CD contains all articles from the last two years of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC). It is available through the IEEE Online Catalog & Store. Members of the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society received their copies through the mail. Visit: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=JC18102

JSSC back issues and all articles from the International Solid-State Circuits Conference from inception through 2000 are available at: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=JD3755

9. IEEE-USA SALARY SURVEY SALE
The 2001-02 edition of the IEEE-USA Salary & Fringe Benefit Survey is now available to IEEE members for $49.95, a reduction of $25 off the original member price. The nation's pre-eminent salary survey for technical professionals contains 64 pages of charts and explanatory text, providing the latest statistics to help users consider prospective jobs and negotiate salaries and benefits. Income data are included in areas such as age, gender, experience, industry, technical experience and geographical location cross tabulations. As the biggest and most accurate measure of member compensation ever conducted by IEEE-USA, the report provides many details not reported in the past. To order, visit: www.ieeeusa.org/catalog/01salary.html

10. TAIWAN TO HOST ASIA-PACIFIC CONFERENCE ON APPLICATION SPECIFIC ICs
The Third IEEE Asia-Pacific Conference on ASICs (AP-ASIC) promoting research and development activities in the field of solid-state circuits will be held in Taipei, Taiwan on 6 to 8 August 2002. The conference site moves every even year within countries of IEEE region 10 and includes short courses, regular and special sessions given by experts in integrated circuits and systems with emerging design technologies, advanced theories and applications of ASICs. Visit www.ee.ncu.edu.tw/~AP-ASIC2002/

11. SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS ARCHITECTURE FOR THE DIGITAL AGE
The latest edition of the International Symposium on Advanced Research in Asynchronous Circuits and Systems (ASYNC2002) hosted keynote speaker Sir Robin Saxby, who addressed the history, development and significance of the ARM architecture as "The Architecture for the Digital Age." The proceedings of this symposium is available at: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=PR1540

12. CHECKING THE PLAY IN PLUG-AND-PLAY: AN IEEE SPECTRUM SPECIAL FEATURE
To speed up design, multiple predesigned circuit blocks are often used in the same system-on-chip (SOC) assembly, but this creates a challenge in knowing if these various blocks will work together. Describing how a chip's logic ought to work ensures that a SOC's building blocks work in harmony, but how do designers do that when they don't know enough about the inner workings of the intellectual property blocks in their systems? IEEE Spectrum magazine examines assertions-based verification, a software technique that may offer a solution. www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/publicfeature/jun02/icd.html

13. TOP TECHNOLOGIES COVERED BY TOP DESIGNERS
Written by some of the world's leading technologists, "Design of High-Performance Microprocessor Circuits" addresses the design of next generation microprocessors in deep submicron CMOS technologies. CMOS and VLSI technologies are integral to cutting-edge circuit design and the topic of circuit design is the focus of this volume. Examples come from the top processors and designers in the field.
