CONSORTIUM PROMOTES SPEEDY HYPERTRANSPORT
TECHNOLOGY
Promoted by a consortium of 51 companies, high-speed data exchange
through and between integrated circuits on chips is being touted as
capable of reaching scorching speeds using new HyperTransport
technology. The new technology is being developed by Advanced Micro
Devices. Data exchange speeds can reach up to 12.8GB per second in
both directions using HyperTransport. Older technologies could only
manage 266MB per second one direction at a time, according to the
Advanced Micro Devices consortium. Read more at:

ENHANCED SKILLS FOR ENGINEERS: MORE THAN TECHNICAL
KNOW-HOW
When it comes to building a successful engineering career,
maintaining technical competence is just one piece of the puzzle.
Additionally, executives and managers expect a level of proficiency
in other non-technical or 'soft' skills, as well as other personal
characteristics common among today’s engineering
professionals. This is the first in a three-part series from IEEE
Director Emeritus Ted Hissey, in the latest issue of IEEE-USA
Today's Engineer: www.todaysengineer.org/July02/skills.htm

CIRCUITS WORKSHOP TO BE HELD IN OCTOBER
The 2002 IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Workshop for Automotive
Electronics, scheduled for 10 to 11 October in Arlington, VA, USA,
is focused on spanning interests in analog, digital, RF and power
systems. The workshop is divided into three half-day sessions with
the following themes: sensors and actuators; communication,
intelligence, and guidance; and advanced power. To find out more or
sign up to attend, visit: www.ieee.org/ssctc

WEEKLY CAREERS NEWSLETTER JOINS WHAT'S NEW @
IEEE
The weekly email newsletter IEEE Career Alert has joined the What's
New @ IEEE program. Written by the editors of IEEE Spectrum
magazine, IEEE Career Alert focuses on engineering career news and
both education and professional issues. IEEE Career Alert will
replace the existing monthly What's New @ IEEE for GOLD (Graduates
of the Last Decade) newsletter. To sign up for this free weekly
newsletter, visit: www.spectrum.ieee.org/careers/signup.html
Current What's New @ IEEE for GOLD subscribers will automatically receive IEEE Career Alert beginning next month. If you are a GOLD subscriber and do not wish to receive IEEE Career Alert, you may unsubscribe at whatsnew.ieee.org

NEW STORAGE CARD OFFERS SMALLER FORMAT WITH LARGER
MEMORY
A postage stamp-sized memory card is the newest feature available
to manufacturers of digital cameras. Fuji Photo Film, Inc. and
Olympus Optical Co. Ltd. are the first to put this format to use in
their products. The new cards weigh about 2 grams and measure
20x25x1.7 mm, are about half the size of the previously-used
SmartMedia cards. These tiny memory devices, manufactured by
Toshiba Corp., are the latest development in the shrinking trend in
digital cameras and allow for smaller devices with larger capacity
memory. Read more at www.eet.com/semi/news/OEG20020801S0041

IMAGING CENTER OF THE WORLD TO HOST ICIP 2002
As home to such imaging and optics powerhouses as Eastman Kodak,
Xerox, Corning and Bausch and Lomb, Rochester, NY, USA, is known as
the imaging center of the world and will host the ninth IEEE
International Conference on Image Processing from 22 to 25
September. Plenary speakers include Chair of the ISO/ITU/IEC Joint
Video Team Dr. Gary. J. Sullivan, Takeo Kanade of Carnegie Mellon
University and Prof. Dave Williams of the Center for Visual
Sciences at the University of Rochester. Learn more about this
conference at icip2002.com/
Don't miss the next conference you need for your career. IEEE sponsors more than 300 technical conferences and workshops each year, highlighting the latest technological advances. Find events through the IEEE ConferenceSearch Web site at: www.ieee.org/conferencesearch/

IEEE MEMBER DIGITAL LIBRARY INFORMATION NOW
AVAILABLE
A new Web site provides IEEE Members with information about the
IEEE Member Digital Library, a subscription service available in
January 2003. The IEEE Member Digital Library allows IEEE Members
exclusive access to full-text papers published in IEEE periodicals
and conference proceedings in the last five years. IEEE Members and
others may now find out more about the subscription service and
sign up to receive more information at: www.ieee.org/ieeemdl

HOT CIRCUITS TOPICS COVERED IN NEW RELEASE
Sponsored by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, the newly
released Proceedings of 2002 IEEE International Symposium on
Circuits and Systems, covers some of the most important topics in
the field ranging from analog circuits and signal processing, VLSI
systems and system on chip to computer-aided design high-frequency
circuits and systems; neural systems and cellular neural networks
and nanotechnology. Find out more at: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=CH37353

IEEE ONLINE CATALOG & STORE LAUNCHES NEW LOOK,
IMPROVED SEARCH
The IEEE Online Catalog & Store has launched a series of
improvements, including an enhanced search feature, new look and
feel, and added news and featured links. A new "Search By" option
encourages customers to jump directly to a search category of
interest, and improved navigation shows how to narrow a search,
browse by category or browse topic headings that clearly lead to
technical categories. Two new navigation tabs, "All Products" and
"Merchandise," allow customers to search and browse those
categories. A new right-hand column offers links to news items,
features, best sellers and other store information. Shop the
definitive source for IEEE products at: shop.ieee.org
10. INTEL AUTHORS ADDRESS HIGH-SPEED CIRCUIT
DESIGN
The operating speeds of today's microprocessors are increasing at a
rate that shows no signs of slowing. Authors Stephen Hall, Garrett
Hall and James McCall say an understanding of high-speed
interconnect phenomena is integral to designers in this
environment. In their book "High-Speed Digital System Design: A
Handbook of Interconnect Theory and Design Practices," these three
Intel engineers have attempted to clarify topics involving the
effects of high frequencies on digital buses and presents a variety
of proven techniques and application examples. Find out more at: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=PC6090

11. OPTICAL INTERCONNECTS: AN IEEE SPECTRUM
SPECIAL REPORT
Within a few years, many of the copper connections in computers
will yield to high-speed optical interconnects, says IEEE Spectrum
magazine. An electrical signal from the processor would modulate a
laser beam, which would shine through an optical fiber or through
air on a photodetector, which would pass the signal on to the
electronics. While more expensive then electronics, IEEE Spectrum
reports that optical technologies are the only way to keep up with
the demand for more powerful microprocessors. Read more:
www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/publicfeature/aug02/opti.html
IEEE Spectrum magazine received the Gold Award for General Excellence in Magazines and the Bronze award for Design Excellence at the Society of National Association Publications' annual conference. Read articles from their latest issue at: www.spectrum.ieee.org
