1. FREE ONLINE SEMINAR OFFERS TIPS ON RESEARCHING SEMICONDUCTORS
IEEE is offering a free online seminar on finding and utilizing IEEE information on semiconductors. The course is scheduled for two sessions, 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. EDT on 30 September. These one-hour online sessions are designed for people interested in a focus on competitive intelligence and the use of IEEE technical content in the creation of intellectual property, including patents, for specific technologies within the scope of electrical engineering and computer science. Advance registration is required, and space is limited.  For questions, or to sign up, please email training@ieee.org. Include your name, affiliation, title, and preferred session and time.

2. NEW ONLINE JOURNAL SECTION UPDATED FOR SEPTEMBER
The "So Many Articles, So Little Time" section of the online version of the IEEE Journal of Solid State Circuits (JSSC) has been updated for September. This online section offers busy engineers four quick and convenient ways to use the journal. From tutorials to cutting edge conference papers, this gateway service is filtered by four categories: JSSC's bests, classics, tutorials and zeitgeist. Read more at: sscs.org/jssc.htm

3. BEST FARES AVAILABLE THROUGH NEW IEEE TRAVEL SERVICES BOOKING TOOL
This month, IEEE Travel Services introduced a new online booking tool that will enable travelers to quickly find the best Web-only rates for flights, car rentals and hotel fares. Users can access the best fares without leaving the security and familiarity of the IEEE Travel Services system, which is more secure, trusted, faster, and easier than booking on an external Web-direct site. In addition, the search tool boasts a maximum 90-second wait time for results. To find out more, or book travel, visit IEEE Travel Services at: www.ieeetravelonline.org

4. MEMBER ACCESS TO KEY CIRCUITS DOCUMENTS AVAILABLE
Members looking for IEEE documents key to their research in circuit and system design not available through their personal subscriptions may benefit from a subscription to the IEEE Member Digital Library. Subscribers can read the full text of IEEE conference proceedings, journals and magazines published in the last five years and available online through IEEE Xplore®. An IEEE member-only product, The IEEE Member Digital Library provides subscribers with a personal electronic file cabinet to access their saved documents from any computer. Members may access articles such as 53rd Electronic Components and Technology Conference. View the abstracts at: ieeexplore.ieee.org/servlet/opac?punumber=8632

To find out more, or to subscribe to the IEEE Member Digital Library, visit: http://www.ieee.org/ieeemdl

5. NEW VOLUME PROVIDES ENGINEER'S COMPLETE WAVEGUIDE RESOURCE
Simplified manufacturing and faster, cheaper development in wafer technology provide the focus of a new book by IEEE Fellow Rainee N. Simons entitled "Coplanar Waveguide Circuits Components and Systems." Simons works in the Communications Technology Division at NASA's Glenn Research Center, and calls this work "an engineer's complete resource" on the topic. Buy this Wiley-IEEE Press book at: www.wiley.com/remtitleinternational.cgi?isbn=0471161217
***IEEE members: Receive a 15% discount on any Wiley-IEEE Press titles. Use code 18493 at checkout***

6. YOUNG GUN COMPANY WORKS TOWARD WORLD'S FASTEST SIGE PROCESS
A new company out of Newport Beach, California, USA, is taking a step up in the circuit world by launching work on what is believed to be the fastest SiGe technology in the world. Jazz Semiconductor Inc., a silicon germanium foundry broken out of Conexant Systems, Inc. about 18 months ago, says it should have prototype 130-nm versions of its SiGe and CMOS processes ready by 2004. 7. NEW PROCEEDINGS OFFER FOCUS ON APPLICATION DOMAINS
The proceedings of the ninth annual International Symposium Advanced Research in Asynchronous Circuits and Systems (ASYNC) have just been published by the IEEE Computer Society. The conference papers offer a specific focus on innovative application domains that could improve design time, power consumption, performance and more. Find out more, or order the proceedings at: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=PR1898

8. THE WIRELESS LAST MILE: IEEE SPECTRUM REPORTS
Wireless metropolitan-area networking is already a $250-million industry, but IEEE Spectrum magazine reports it will soon shift into overdrive now that an IEEE Standard, 802.16, is being used by a consortium of computer and telecom companies to ensure compatible chipsets, access cards, and base stations. This month, IEEE Spectrum looks at some of the first "wireless DSL" systems and how both standards-based and proprietary technologies will be used in the next few years to create digital-divide-busting wireless networks to reach those customers the telephone and cable companies have not been able to reach. Read more: www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/publicfeature/sep03/wire.html

9. GAAS IC SYMPOSIUM TO MEET IN SAN DIEGO THIS NOVEMBER
Over the last 25 years, the IEEE GaAs IC Symposium has become a prominent international forum on developments in integrated circuit technologies using GaAs, InP, SiGe, GaN, SiC and other compound semiconductor devices. The 2003 Symposium will be held San Diego, California, USA, from 9 to 12 November. Browse the advance program and register at: www.gaasic.org

Don't miss the next conference you need for your career. IEEE sponsors more than 300 technical conferences and workshops each year, highlighting the latest technological advances. Find events through the IEEE ConferenceSearch Web site at: www.ieee.org/conferencesearch/

10. CALIFORNIA COMPANY WINS BID TO WORK ON FIGHTER TECHNOLOGY
California chipmaker CPU Technology Inc. announced that it won a recent contract bid to work on new technology for the F-16 fighter jet. Based in Pleasanton, California, USA, CPU said it will develop prototype devices to be used in a new central air data computer (CADC) for the military aircraft. 11. BACKSCATTER: TAKING A LOOK INSIDE PEER REVIEW
To the neophyte, peer review might seem a jungle; to others, it's a familiar hurdle to overcome in the quest to get papers published. How does it work, who's involved and how will you know whether or not your peers judged your work fairly? From IEEE-USA's Today's Engineer: www.todaysengineer.org/aug03/backscatter.asp

12. IEEE FINANCIAL ADVANTAGE PROGRAM MARKS 1OTH ANNIVERSARY
Now in its 10th year, the IEEE Financial Advantage Program (FAP) has grown to include over 30 benefits packages serving more than 100,000 IEEE members around the world. The IEEE was one of the first professional organizations to offer its members benefits such as life insurance, financial services, and business services, according to an article in this month's The Institute. Recently, such new benefits as purchasing programs for computer equipment and office supplies have been added to FAP's repertoire. For more details about FAP, go to: www.ieee.org/fap
