ANALYSTS LOOK TO 2003 FOR CHIP INDUSTRY
RECOVERY
Even before the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in
New York and Pentagon in Washington, DC, and subsequent market
downturn, semiconductor industry forecasts did not show the
positive outlook many had hoped for. Many analysts point to
indicators that a strong chip sector recovery is at least nine
months away. Visit

2.
NEW OPTIONS ADDED TO IEEE MUTUAL FUND PROGRAM
Following the merger of Chase Manhattan Corporation and J.P. Morgan
earlier this year, the IEEE Mutual Fund Program now offers IEEE
members in the U.S. a broader range of investment products and
services. With a JPMorgan fund, you get the benefits of investing
while leaving the day-to-day decisions to investment experts. From
conservative to aggressive investments, JPMorgan offers over 30
stock, bond and money market funds to help you work toward your
goals. As an IEEE member, you can save up to 5.75% when you invest in
Class A shares of a JPMorgan Fund. For a free prospectus or
brochure, US members can contact fap-benefits@ieee.org or for
more information, visit
www.ieee.org/services/financial/fap/programs/financial_services/mutualfunds.html
IEEE's non-U.S. Investment Program enables members outside the US and Canada to invest in mutual funds by establishing an International Financial Management Account with Smith Barney. Service charges for Smith Barney Off-Shore Mutual Funds have been waived for IEEE members, resulting in savings of up to 5%. The program offers a wide selection of equity and fixed income funds for IEEE members to choose from. Find out more at: www.ieee.org/services/financial/fap/programs/financial_services/investment.html

INTERNATIONAL ELECTRON DEVICES MEETING TO BE HELD
IN WASHINGTON, DC
The International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) is the
world’s largest semiconductor device conference,
and the premier forum for latest breakthroughs in the technology,
design and manufacturing of semiconductors and other electron
devices. Among the breakthroughs to be highlighted at this
year’s IEDM are: the world’s
fastest RF CMOS technology, operating at 150 GHz Fmax and suitable
for next-generation fiber-optic communications systems; the first 1
Gb Flash NAND memory suitable for mass production; and the first
successful fabrication of Silicon on Nothing MOSFET. This year's
meeting will be held in Washington, DC, December 3-5. www.ieee.org/conference/iedm
IEEE sponsors more than 300 technical conferences and workshops each year, highlighting today's very latest technological advances. The IEEE ConferenceSearch Web site can pinpoint an IEEE conference to help you with the work you are doing today. www.ieee.org/conferencesearch/

RADIO FREQUENCY INTEGRATED CIRCUITS SYMPOSIUM SEEKS
ONLINE SUBMISSIONS
Online submission of papers to the 2002 Radio Frequency Integrated
Circuits Symposium is solicited until November 26, 2001. Topics
sought include wireless transceivers, communications RF IC,
emerging RF technologies, IC designs, integrated modules and
functions, highly integrated transceiver ICs, RF device technology
and RF CAD design. Visit the RFIC Web site www.rfic2002.org to learn more about
topics, deadlines and the program of the conference.

NEW COURSE TARGETS FIBER OPTIC COMMUNICATIONS
The IEEE Electron Devices Society has launched a new course in the
Vanguard Series, their series of short courses on electron devices
technology. Presented by Dr. Joe C. Campbell of the University of
Texas at Austin, "Overview of Fiber Optic Communications" provides
information on key optoelectronic devices for optical communication
systems, specifically, semiconductor lasers, photodetectors,
optical modulators and WDM components. shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=EV6977

CHIP-SCALE LABS DEFEND AGAINST BIOWARFARE: AN IEEE
SPECTRUM SPECIAL FEATURE
In the event of a biowarfare attack, the quick identification of
pathogens is critical. Modern labs can take days to analyze a
sample, but a faster solution may arrive soon. Scientists working
with the military and other government agencies are developing
portable, chip-scale devices to speed up response to biological
threats. These new devices use photolithography and other
techniques popularized in semiconductor manufacturing, allowing for
much more rapid investigation.

NEW VOLUME FOCUSES ON DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF RF
CIRCUIT COMPONENTS
The newly-released "Radio Frequency Circuit Design, Vol. 1" by W.
Alan Davis and Krishna Agarwal provides engineers with the
technical resource to design and analyze RF circuit components.
Focusing on circuits used at 800 MHz to 2GHz range, this guide
explores filters, impedance transformers, oscillators, class A
amplifiers and more. This title also addresses the latest
techniques such as S-parameters and current applications of MMIC to
RF design. Buy this title through IEEE Fatbrain, an IEEE
members-only site offering discounts on the most popular technology
titles from the leading publishers in the field. www.ieee.org/ieeefatbrain

STAYING CURRENT: TIPS, STRATEGIES AND SOLUTIONS
Warning: Falling behind on current trends and technologies could be
hazardous to your career. If you're worried about becoming a
dinosaur at the office, rest easy -- it's never too late to update
your knowledge and skills. Terry Malkinson offers a pragmatic
strategy for keeping current and building the career you've always
wanted.

10. INTEL LAUNCHES COMM-CHIP EFFORT
Intel Corporation announced the launch of an ASIC division devoted
to production of communications chips. The semiconductor giant said
it will use third-party intellectual property suppliers to support
its new venture. Historically, Intel has been a company known for
manufacturing its own products. Intel said it is optimistic about
the future of communications-based circuits despite recent downward
market trends. Visit www.eetimes.com/story/OEG20010924S0067
11. ANNUAL IEEE ELECTIONS AWAITING BALLOTS
Your vote counts -- take the time to cast your ballot in the 2001
IEEE Annual Election. The deadline for voting is 1 November 2001
and ballots were mailed in early September. Read about the
candidates at www.ieee.org/organizations/corporate/candidates.htm
