1. TRANSCEIVER COMPETITION JUMPS WITH NEW RELEASE
The competition in the SerDis chip sector is turning up the heat following the unveiling of the SkyRail M27205 serializer/deserializer chip by Mindspeed. The SkyRail is purported to be the most robust four-channel SerDes transceiver in the industry for 10 Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Fiber Channel applications. The significance of this particular chip is that it converts signals either from a parallel, low-speed data interface to a high-speed, serial interface or from high-speed to low-speed. Mindspeed now claims the widest variety of transceivers in the field, initiating reaction from their closest competitors. www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=9338

2. WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS ISSUES ADDRESSED IN NEW VOLUME
Wireless communications continues to prove itself among the fastest-growing areas of communications technology and three experts in the field have compiled a selection of current and classic papers on the subject. "Circuits for Wireless Communications Selected Readings," edited by S. Tantaratana, B. Srisuchinwong and W. Surakampontorn, is a resource for students, engineers new to cellular communications and experienced engineers alike. shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=SR117

3. TUTORIAL MAKES DRAM DESIGN MORE ACCESSIBLE
Over the past two decades, most dynamic random access memory (DRAM) literature has concentrated on the user rather than the designer. Brent Keeth and R. Jacob Baker have made DRAM design accessible to both novice and practicing engineers in their volume "DRAM Circuit Design: A Tutorial." With more than US$25 billion in annual sales, more DRAM circuits are manufactured than any other integrated circuit in production today. shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=PC5863

4. IEEE ASSISTS MEMBERS IN JOB SEARCH
The IEEE Job Site connects technical job seekers with prospective employers. Users can create a personal profile, including desired salary, job location and discipline. Jobs matching user profiles will be emailed to potential applicants, or users can search the entire site. Over 975 employers were registered on the site as of 5 October. Register today: www.ieee.org/jobs

How many jobs have been lost as the world economy shrinks? The Financial Times' technology job cuts watch is keeping count: tm0.com/sbct.cgi?s=161763392&i=410247&d=1936006

5. EIGHT SKILLS YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
If you want to succeed in a cutting-edge technology position, you'll have to rely on more than big dreams and a college degree. Today's Engineer has eight "killer skills" that will help you thrive in today's competitive job market and achieve your professional goals. www.todaysengineer.org/careerfocus/oct01te/oct01features/skills.html

6. IEEE ELECTION RESULTS: MICHAEL J. ADLER 2002 PRESIDENT-ELECT
The results of IEEE's annual elections have been announced. Michael J. Adler will serve as 2002 President-elect of the IEEE. For a complete list of the newly elected officers, including division delegates and directors and officers of the Standards Association, IEEE-USA and Technical Activities, go to www.ieee.org/organizations/corporate/candidates.htm

7. NUCLEAR POWER: AN IEEE SPECTRUM SPECIAL REPORT
From this summer's California blackouts to the recent terror attacks, the discussion of nuclear technology has been revitalized worldwide. This month, IEEE Spectrum Magazine covers a variety of issues in the field. Review current popular opinion on nuclear power, the life of a nuclear power plant, how a decade-old design could signal a nuclear resurgence, the business of building a nuclear reactor, a temporary solution to nuclear waste, and much more. www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/publicfeature/nov01/nintro.html

8. CITATION STUDY: IEEE PUBLISHES NINE OF TOP TEN ENGINEERING JOURNALS
The IEEE registered another year of high journal and magazine citation performance, according to the Institute for Scientific Information's Journal Citation Report for 2000. The IEEE has nine of the top 10 most influential journals in electrical and electronic engineering, based on a selection of 202 journals studied in this category. IEEE also publishes the number-one journals in robotics, telecommunications, automation and control systems, and transportation science and technology according to the ISI study. Other IEEE periodicals ranked high in applied physics, acoustics, education, biomedical engineering, and nuclear science and technology. The ISI study ranks journals by how often they are cited by other scientific publications in their initial year of publication. www.ieee.org/products/citations.xml

9. ISCAS 2002 TO ADDRESS "UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING"
The 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), scheduled for 26-29 May in Scottsdale, AZ, will address "circuits and systems for ubiquitous computing." The Symposium will include regular technical sessions, including poster and lecture sessions. Topics will range from analog circuits, VLSI systems, computer-aided design, and wireless and wireline systems and circuits to RF and high-frequency circuits and systems and digital and analog signal processing. ISCAS will also include tutorial and special sessions. www.iscas2002.com

10. NEW RELEASE ON VLSI CIRCUITS
Sponsored by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society, the newly-released Proceedings of the 2001 Symposium on VLSI covers some of the most important topics in the field ranging from RF front end, high speed circuits, and high performance DRAM to PLLs and frequency synthesizers, design optimizations and new technologies and memory redundancy. This annual conference is a forum for interdisciplinary research involving VLSI circuits, systems, CAD, and theory, with an emphasis on novel ideas at an early stage of development. shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=CH37216 ***What's New Special - Use Code TIJ for 20% discount - ordering instructions below***

11. REMOTE MEETINGS: BEING THERE WITHOUT GOING ANYWHERE
Prior to the events of 11 September, business travel was "just another business expense." The tragedies, however, have prompted many companies to reconsider current travel policies and seek alternatives to face-to-face meetings. In a continuing project that began in 1999, IEEE's Region 3 e-Conferencing Committee is developing guidelines for conducting just such meetings. Committee member Charles Lord shares the latest. http://www.todaysengineer.org/careerfocus/oct01te/oct01features/e-conferencing.html

12. NEW VOLUME INTRODUCES DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF ELECTRO-OPTICAL DEVICES
Philip C. Hobbs has introduced a comprehensive work on the design and construction of any electro-optical device in his "Building Electro-Optical Systems: Making It All Work." The single volume investigates basic optical calculations, optical systems, signal processing, electronic construction techniques and digital post-processing.
