1. US PATENT OFFICE
ONLINE
If you haven't spent any time in the patent world, it's hard to
fathom just how revolutionary some simple-sounding changes to the
US patent office Web presence are, according to Sabra Chartrand in
the New York Times. In the last two months the agency expanded the
patent archives from 1790 through 1976 to its searchable online
database and enabled electronic patent applications. Until
recently, searching the database of patents filed was limited to
the last 24 years. Now the full-text database offers text of more
than four million patents issued from 1790 to 1975. Visit
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/11/13/technology/13PATE.html
There are software tools at the web site to write, calculate the
filing fees, compress, encrypt and transmit a US patent
application. Visit http://www.uspto.gov/patft/
2. TRANSMETA OFFERS
NEW CHIP DESIGN, NEW PRODUCTS AND NEW IPO
Transmeta Corporation is offering a new and radical microprocessor
unique in its capability to extend battery life by using software
to adjust voltage and frequency on-the-fly, consuming only the
amount of power needed for maximum efficiency. Product applications
planned for the chip architecture design include Web pad products,
embedded security devices, computerized body apparel, and laptops;
some introduced at November's COMDEX. Visit http://www.transmetazone.com/
The heart of the technology is the
revolutionary combination of a Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW)
engine and "Code Morphing" software. This flexible and
efficient hardware-software hybrid interacts with operating systems
and applications as a single processing unit. Current Crusoe chips
use a Mobile Linux with its OEM customers to look like X86
hardware. Find out more at
http://www.transmeta.com/crusoe/technology.html
The prognosis from financial fund
managers to the near term profitability of Transmeta's newly issued
stock is varied. Visit http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-3415178.html
3. TECHIE TOYS FOR
THE HOLIDAYS
The December issue of IEEE Spectrum looks at electronics
manufacturers' new high-tech products for this holiday season. Each
of these gadgets combine the functions of several types of
high-tech toys already on the market. Highlighted in this article
are a wristwatch that utilizes Global Positioning System (GPS)
technology, a PC wristwatch, a digital camera wristwatch, smart
dual-band web phones, and advanced multi-function PDAs that can
access the wireless web. For the complete story, visit http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/publicfeature/dec00/gift.html
4. PRESENTING AT
VLSI NEXT JUNE? SUBMIT YOUR SUMMARY BY 10 JANUARY Toshiaki Masuhara
of Hitachi says "The friendships I developed at the VLSI
Symposium have been so important to heighten sensitivity and focus
my vision for the mainstream technical targets. This is the way to
find the solutions for the technical challenges." To be
considered for inclusion in VLSI (12-16 June), paper summaries must
be submitted by 10 January. Papers will be considered on the basis
of originality and quality. Implementation in a semiconductor chip
and measured results are not mandatory: they are required only when
feasibility of the presented circuit is not clear by simulations
alone, such as the case for most analog submissions. It is
understood that papers in new areas are likely to contain less
quantitative evaluations than those in more established areas.

5. NEW IEEE WIRELESS
ZONE LAUNCHED The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) has
introduced the "Wireless Zone," a comprehensive Web site
that brings together the most current information about the IEEE
802 Wireless standards, including IEEE 802.11 for Local Area
Networks (WLANS), IEEE 802.15 for Personal Area Networks (WPANs)
and IEEE 802.16 for Broadband Wireless Access. The site also
provides information on the IEEE 802 standards working groups, the
status of the wireless standards, and the latest news on wireless
technology. Take a look at http://standards.ieee.org/wireless/
for more in depth information.
6. COMPREHENSIVE
GUIDE TO LOW-POWER CMOS DESIGN OFFERED
Low-power CMOS design is a field evolving by leaps and bounds today
making system design from component technologies and circuits to
architecture and CAD techniques of prime importance.
"Low-Power CMOS Design" edited by Anantha Chandrakasan
and Robert Brodersen offers a comprehensive overview through a
collection of papers summarizing the key low-power contributions by
experts in the field. Find out more at http://shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=PC5703

7. INTERNET ERA
REQUIRES NEW EMPHASIS ON TECHNOLOGY
The new millennium marks the beginning of the Internet era. With
the proliferation of high speed and portable Internet access
devices such as cellular phone, PDA, cable modem and DSL,
ubiquitous, high speed Internet access is becoming a reality. The
field of Internet access systems is widely diverse and ranges from
wireless cellular phones to wired broadband access devices with
correspondingly diverse circuit and device requirements.
"Technology for the Internet Era" offers a course made up
of five lectures exploring the key components of both wireless and
wired Internet access systems and the implications on device
technology. Visit http://shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=EV6971

8. SUCCESS IN
TECHNOLOGY BROUGHT WITHIN REACH
Succeeding in today's technology industries is difficult, but
mastering design paradigms and recent technological developments
brings that goal within sight. "Design of Analog CMOS
Integrated Circuits" by Behzad Razavi emphasizes these topics
of analysis based on the author's teaching and research experience
in the past ten years. Further information on this volume is
available through IEEE fatbrain http://www.ieee.org/services/infoadvantage/fatbrain.html
9. JSSC FOCUSES IN
DEPTH ON THE BEST OF ISSCC
The November and December special issues of the IEEE Journal of
Solid-State Circuits feature the cream of the 2000 International
Solid-State Circuits Conference, the world's foremost chip
designers conference. Expanded from the two page conference
presentation, the six or seven page Journal articles are full
length and peer reviewed papers. Anyone can browse the table of
contents of the JSSC online through IEEEXplore? and IEEE Members
can view the abstracts. Non-subscribers can order single issues
through Mailto:customer-service@ieee.org.
Solid-State Circuits Society members can search and download the
full articles. Visit http://www.ieee.org/ieeexplore
and type a quick search on Solid-State Circuits.
