INDUSTRY VET SAYS NANOTECHNOLOGY IS KEY TO
SEMICONDUCTOR SUCCESS
Nick Tredennick, editor of industry newsletter DynamicSilicon, said
recently that he believes nanotechnology is the factor to knock the
semiconductor industry into the next period of sustained growth.
Speaking at the annual Embedded Systems Conference in Boston last
month and quoted in EE Times, Tredennick argued that Moore's Law
has always been an enabler of the industry, rather than a driver.

SYNTHETIC SKIN IN TROUBLE: AN IEEE SPECTRUM SPECIAL
REPORT
The fledgling field of tissue engineering, which makes synthetic
organs as replacements for failing human ones, is in financial
distress. This fall, two pioneering makers of replacement
engineered skin declared bankruptcy. Industry insiders blame their
failure in part on insufficiently automated manufacturing
processes, writes contributing editor William Leventon in the
December issue of IEEE Spectrum. Read more:

INTEL AUTHORS ADDRESS HIGH-SPEED CIRCUIT DESIGN
The operating speeds of today's microprocessors are increasing at a
rate that shows no signs of slowing. Authors Stephen Hall, Garrett
Hall and James McCall say an understanding of high-speed
interconnect phenomena is integral to designers in this
environment. In their Wiley-IEEE Press book, "High-Speed Digital
System Design: A Handbook of Interconnect Theory and Design
Practices," these three Intel engineers have attempted to clarify
topics involving the effects of high frequencies on digital buses
and presents a variety of proven techniques and application
examples. Find out more at: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=PC5929

BIG MOVES CAN HAPPEN DESPITE ECONOMY
Imagine in the current economy, leaving a career you've built for
nearly three decades to take your chances as an upper-level
executive with a brand-new, unknown and untested IC startup. This
is exactly what Bill Eversole chose to do when he left Texas
Instruments, Inc. this year. Eversole's choice, unconventional
though it may be, certainly bucked the trend of today's economic
turmoil. Read his success story as chronicled in EE Times: www.theworkcircuit.com/story/OEG20021106S0044

SOLID-STATE CIRCUITS CONFERENCE CELEBRATES 50TH
ANNIVERSARY IN FEBRUARY
The 2003 IEEE International Solid-state Circuits Conference (ISSCC
2003), being held in San Francisco, California, USA from 9 to 13
February, marks the 50th anniversary of the conference. This year's
event will cover several subject areas, including analog, wireless
and RF communications, wireline communications, digital design and
fabrication, and signal processing. To find out more, visit: www.isscc.org/isscc/
Coming live from ISSCC 2003: "Accessing IEEE Technical Information," a free Web conference illustrating how the new IEEE Member Digital Library can help with the research you are doing today. Register for this event at: www.ieee.org/ieeemdl
IEEE sponsors more than 300 technical conferences and workshops each year, highlighting today's very latest technological advances. The IEEE ConferenceSearch Web site can pinpoint an IEEE conference to help you with the work you are doing today. www.ieee.org/conferencesearch/

HIGH-FREQUENCY CIRCUIT AND INTERCONNECT ANALYSIS
TRAINING OFFERED
A new partnership between the IEEE Education Partners Program and
Omniz Global Knowledge Corporation offers IEEE members a 10-percent
discount on courses in signal integrity. Developed by IEEE members
Dr. Michel Nakhla and Dr. Ram Achar, both faculty in electrical
engineering at Carleton University, the program consists of series
of courses covering topics in high-frequency effects in VLSI and
microwave circuits, modeling/simulation difficulties associated
with high-speed interconnects, and a thorough study of
modeling/simulation strategies for high-speed interconnects,
including model-reduction. Find out more at: services3.ieee.org/organizations/eab/eduPartners.htm

NEW GAAS IC PROCEEDINGS RELEASED
Sponsored by three different IEEE societies, the newly-released
Proceedings of the IEEE Gallium Arsenide Integrated Circuits
Symposium (GaAs IC) cover some of the today's most important topics
in electron devices, circuitry and microwave theory. GaAs IC 2002
was sponsored by the IEEE Electron Devices, Solid State Circuits
and Microwave Theory and Technique Societies and addressed topics
from GHz frequency state-of-the-art electronic circuits, devices,
and technologies, commercial wireless and power amplifiers to
receivers, high-speed digital communications and interface
electronics. For more information, visit: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=CH37354

FREE TRIAL AVAILABLE FOR NEW IEEE INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY COLLECTION
In January, your organization may be eligible to receive a free
online trial to the new IEEE Information Technology Library (ITeL).
IEEE ITeL includes more than 900 IEEE conference proceedings and
selected periodicals in the areas of computing, communications,
signal processing and circuits and systems. Intended for
corporations, universities and government institutions, IEEE ITeL
will be available to subscribers in January 2003. If your
organization subscribes to the new IEEE Information Technology
Library online collection by 31 March 2003, it will receive US$5000
off the regular subscription price. To arrange a free trial for
your organization, ask your information professional to send a
request to mailto:onlineproducts@ieee.org For more information on
the IEEE Information Technology Library, visit: www.ieee.org/onlinepubs

MAKING TEAM DECISIONS WISELY
Project managers' decision-making abilities are often what
distinguish them from other members of their project teams. But,
knowing when to bring other team members into the decision-making
process is a talent, too. Larry Richman looks at some of the pros
and cons of team decision making, and offers some rules-of-thumb
for ensuring the best outcomes. www.todaysengineer.org/Nov02/decisions.htm
10. NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK COMING FEBRUARY
2003
Start planning your celebration now for National Engineers Week,
which runs 16 to 22 February 2003. E-Week co-chairs the American
Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers,
Inc. (ASHRAE) and Lockheed Martin are launching "The New Faces of
Engineering," a program that will spotlight the outstanding
contributions of America's youngest engineering professionals. For
more information, including volunteer opportunities in your area,
