1. IEEE MAGAZINE EXAMINES CONSUMER NETWORKING AND COMMUNICATIONS
The May issue of IEEE Communications Magazine features several articles on the topic of consumer networking and communications. The five articles address three linked themes: residential gateways and the services they offer; peer-to-peer systems in gaming; and the requirements of security and privacy. The guest editorial on the topic is now accessible to all readers at: www.comsoc.org/ci1/Public/2004/may/index.html

2. IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: IEEE SPECTRUM REPORTS
Scanning light beams to the retina could revolutionize displays for everything from cell phones to games, according to an article in the May issue of IEEE Spectrum. The forerunners of such systems, known as scanned-beam displays, are just now hitting the market and offer distinct real-world advantages to users. Scanning the light into only one of your eyes, for instance, would allow images to be laid over your view of real objects, providing an animated, X-ray?like glimpse of the simulated innards of a car's engine or a human body. Alternatively, scanning slightly different images into each eye could render vivid three-dimensional scenes with pure, spectral colors. 4. IEEE PUBLISHES HANDBOOK TO IEEE 802.15.3 ON WIRELESS MULTIMEDIA
The IEEE 802.15.3 standard addresses an untapped market that goes beyond IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth? wireless technologies. "Wireless Multimedia: A Handbook to the IEEE 802.15.3 Standard" clarifies the IEEE 802.15.3 standard for individuals who are implementing compliant devices and shows how the standard can be used to develop wireless multimedia applications. Some of these applications include: wireless keyboards and printers, personal video and digital cameras, digital audio players and headphones, gaming, home theater system and stereo system components, and more. For details about this handbook, visit the IEEE Online Catalog & Store: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=SP1132

5. NEW SENSORS CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES CALLS FOR PAPERS
The first IEEE Communications Society Conference on Sensor and Ad Hoc Communications and Networks (IEEE SECON 2004) has announced a call for papers. Original technical papers which address the communications, networking, systems and algorithmic aspects of ad hoc and sensor networks, as well as those that describe practical deployment and implementation experiences, are solicited for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings. This new IEEE Communications Society conference will provide a forum to exchange ideas, techniques, and applications, discuss best practices, raise awareness and share experiences. SECON will be held in Santa Clara, California, from 4 to 7 October 2004, and the paper submission deadline is 7 June. For more information, visit: www.ieee-secon.org/2004/

6. PROCEEDINGS FOR PERVASIVE COMPUTING CONFERENCE RELEASED
The proceedings of the Second IEEE Annual Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications (PERCOM 2004), held in Orlando, Florida in March, are now available from the IEEE Online Catalog & Store and through IEEE Xplore. PERCOM provided a forum for researchers and engineers alike to present their latest advances in the field of pervasive computing and communications. To find out more about these proceedings, or to purchase them, visit: shop.ieee.org/store/product.asp?prodno=PR2090

IEEE online subscribers can access the title via IEEE Xplore:  ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/RecentCon.jsp?puNumber=8996

7. NEW EDITION OF BESTSELLING REAL-TIME SYSTEMS DESIGN BOOK NOW AVAILABLE
Author Phillip Laplante has updated his bestselling guide to building real-time systems with the release of "Real-Time Systems Design and Analysis, Third Edition." This new book from IEEE Press and John Wiley & Sons maintains its predecessors' systems-based approach, which was devised to help engineers write problem-solving software. Dr. Laplante incorporates a survey of related technologies and their histories, complete with time-saving practical tips, hands-on instructions, C code, and insights into decreasing ramp-up times. Chapters discuss hardware considerations and software requirements, software systems design, the software production process, performance estimation and optimization, and engineering considerations. 8. ANNUAL PRICING STUDY AGAIN CONFIRMS VALUE OF IEEE JOURNALS
For the tenth year in a row, the annual IEEE Journal Pricing Study has determined that IEEE periodicals are priced significantly lower than titles from other publishers. On average, IEEE journals are priced 39% below market-average list prices, upholding the IEEE mission to publish quality material of scientific value at an affordable price. The annual study compares IEEE list pricing to other, statistically average, 500-page publications in the field of electrical engineering or computer science publications.

By joining any of the 38 IEEE Societies, IEEE members can subscribe to that society's journals and magazines at a special member rate that is a fraction of non-member list prices. For more information on adding IEEE member subscriptions, visit: www.ieee.org/addservices

9. BLOCKBUSTER TECHNOLOGY PATENTS LINKED TO IEEE CITATIONS
A new study from CHI Research Inc. illustrates specific examples of innovative "blockbuster" patents that build on IEEE science. This follow-up to a previous CHI study demonstrates impressive results for specific technology subcategories, such as telecommunications and computer hardware. For example, Qualcomm Incorporated's fundamental 1990 patent for Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology references four articles from IEEE journals. CDMA later became one of the fastest growing wireless technologies and is now one of the highest-cited patents in the U.S. patent system. There are more than 1,000 highly cited patents that reference at least three IEEE articles. For the full report, visit: www.ieee.org/patentcitations

10. GATEWAY INSURANCE OFFERS IEEE MEMBERS COVERAGE WHEN TRAVELING
Planning to travel away from your home country? The IEEE Financial Advantage Program offers Gateway insurance to IEEE members, their families, and their associates, providing coverage for accident and illness medical expense when traveling abroad. With five different plans to choose from, and options based on where people are traveling to and from, the Gateway plans offer help in many situations, particularly when existing coverage is limited. For more information visit: www.ieeeinsurance.com/gtwy/highlite.asp

11. BACKSCATTER: THE COLLYERS AND THE WEB
With the number of pages added daily to the Internet estimated to be between five and ten million, are we becoming swamped with information we can't process? How can we find good content without getting "caught in the Web"? Donald Christiansen remembers the eccentric Collyer brothers and lessons learned from their unfortunate demise, in the latest edition of IEEE-USA Today's Engineer: www.todaysengineer.org/apr04/backscatter.asp

12. NEW STUDY REPORTS SURGE IN U.S. BROADBAND USERS
Over 33 million homes in the U.S. will access the Internet via a broadband connection by the end of 2004, according to a new report. The study calculates that approximately 31 percent of all households will have a high-speed Internet connection. The report points to lower prices and branded content as factors in helping motivate customers to switch from dial-up to broadband. news.com.com/2100-1034-5202041.html
