The November issue of PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE examines the ever-growing imperative to revolutionize the electric power industry, with an established objective to better understand the challenges that the industry faces in overcoming recurring obstacles.

As the anniversary of the notorious 2002 East Coast Blackout looms ahead, this special issue will take a cause and effect approach to the many technical glitches in energy systems that often lead to power shortages and other malfunctions. Recognizing the necessity for power industries to take preemptive steps in avoiding these difficult and sometimes catastrophic errors in its various systems, the issue explores a thought-provoking assessment of what policy and engineering changes are needed and why. Some of the questions that the issue examines include:

  • Will online adaptation provide a realistic method of changing supply/demand patterns?
  • What are the major design and operational challenges to reliable electricity services, and how can they be overcome?

Special issue editors include experts such as Marija D. Ilic, ECE and Engineering & Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon; Francisco Galiana, Professor ECE, Mcgill University, Canada; Mohammad Shahidehpou, Director, Electric Power and Power Electronics Center, Illinois Institute of Technology; Joe Chow, Professor of Electrical, Computer and System Engineering at Rensellaer Polytechnic Institute; Robert Thomas, Professor of Electrical Engineering, EE Department, Cornell University; Felix Wu, Chair, Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of Hong Kong.

About the PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE
PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE is an archival, refereed, fully referenced monthly journal that covers all aspects of electronics, electrical engineering, and computer engineering with reviews, surveys, and tutorial papers.

Look to PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE for definitive treatment of today's vital technology subjects. Special sections and special issues are structured compilations of papers that cover a given technology in its many and varied aspects. Invited papers cover more focused topics, giving readers background and insight.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE forms a vital repository of basic information that engineers and scientists can draw on for many years. It is the source for engineers who:

  • embarking on new projects
  • keep abreast of developing technologies with a view toward adapting them to current projects
  • maintain a multidisciplinary perspective
  • seek to transfer technology applications from one specialty to another
  • are dealing with the real world engineering complications of technology convergence
