How to Prepare Grant Proposals on Behalf of IEEE
- Develop the proposal Idea
- What is the project and what will it accomplish?
- Why is the project needed?
- What are the goals and objectives?
- Who will benefit?
- When will the project occur?
- How will the results be measured?
- Identify funding agency
- Follow the funding agency's proposal guidelines
- Read the guidelines carefully
- If possible, review proposals funded in the past by the agency
- Find out about the proposal reviewers
- Begin writing the proposal
- Make the proposal easy to read by using headings, sub-headings, and graphics
- Use font size and margins prescribed by the funding agency
- Provide a table of contents (required by some granting agencies)
- Keep the proposal as brief as possible, avoid overkill
- Be sure to include all references and footnotes
- Ensure the proposal flows logically from the problem to the objectives to the budget
- Include information about the IEEE, assume the reader has no knowledge of IEEE
- Gain the reader's attention, use words and titles that emphasize benefits to people
- Be sure the reader clearly understands the urgent need for the project before presenting the solution
- Use facts and professional opinions to prove your case
- Prepare the proposal budget
- Identify expenses to be charged to the project
- Prepare a budget justification document
- Include IEEE's Indirect Cost rate of 8%
- Determine if program income is associated with the project - will any income be earned by the IEEE as result of this project from sales, fees, etc.
- Identify cost sharing if required by funding agency
- Ask others to review the proposal
- Send the proposal to IEEE Development Office for review, approval, and submission
