Current EDS Initiatives

  • ADCOM/ADMINISTRATION/AWARDS/FINANCE/WEB-SITE-RELATED
    • Add at least one GOLD member to all standing and technical committees and establish a GOLD Adhoc Committee with a Career-Assistance Subcommittee.
    • Conduct a survey to gather and analyze information on emerging and waning technical areas to better understand the needs of EDS members and non-members for now and in the future with regards to publications, conferences and other benefits. This information will also be used to determine any necessary changes to add, consolidate or eliminate any technical committees.
    • Develop a proposal, obtain all the appropriate approvals and develop an implementation schedule for an "Early Carrer" Award for GOLD Members
  •

  • CHAPTER/EDUCATION-RELATED
    • As a strategic response to the continual move in the Semiconductor Industry to both China and India, continue to work to increase EDS’ presence and activities in these countries. This would include the formation of new chapters, and holding of chapter meetings and coordination of workshops/mini-colloquia with participation by EDS Officers and Distinguished Lecturers.
    • Participate in the IEEE Education Department’s initiative to develop a new system, IEEE Expert Now (formerly XELL), to offer members and non-members web-based short courses. Project includes identifying two short courses each year and helping to advertise all EDS courses to EDS members.
    • Expand DL Program to have GOLD lecturers with its own budget and some different policies and procedures to be called the Student/GOLD Ambassador Lecturers Program.
    • Investigate having EDS DLs prepare Powerpoint talks with audio to be offered to EDS chapters in lieu of having a lecturer give an in-person talk and also to have such presentations serve as a replacement for the EDS Videotape Lending Library.
    • As a means to increase the benefits to EDS members, work with Publications VP on possibility of converting all IEDM short course videotapes to CD/DVD.
  •

  • MEETING-RELATED
    • Participate in IEEE-wide initiative to follow-up with conferences to obtain the Xplore-compliant CD for their proceedings to improve the posting time of the proceedings to Xplore.
    • Work with IEEE Conference Services to streamline and customize the Memorandums of Understanding required for financially co-sponsored and technically co-sponsored meetings.
  •

  • MEMBERSHIP-RELATED
    • Coordinate to again hold a lecture for GOLD members at the IEDM as well as provide them with a forum (EDS Dinner/Social) to network with AdCom members, attempting to improve on the arrangements, publicity and membership recruitment efforts of last year.
    • Research the possibility and implement the offering of an EDS ‘Celebrated’ Membership whereby EDS would invite and pay for well-known and respected individuals in the field to become IEEE and EDS members.
  •

  • PUBLICATION-RELATED
    • Look into the possibility of establishing an EDS ‘express publishing’ type of journal.
    • Complete implementation phase of moving EDL to Manuscript Central which involves training authors, reviewers and editors, addressing any system or procedural issues, analyzing the Manuscript Central reports available versus the current system reports and maintaining the current turnaround time.
    • Research possibility and cost of developing an automated author feedback system for EDL using Manuscript Central. If feasible and affordable, work with IEEE Publications and ScholarOne to implement the system for EDL.
    • Determine the process for identifying the authors and the basic contents and frequency to initiate having an article written by a student included in the EDS Newsletter on an ongoing basis.
