V. Ramgopal Rao obtained his doctorate from the Faculty of Electrical
Engineering, Universitaet der Bundeswehr Munich, Germany in 1997 after his post-graduate studies at IIT Bombay. After a two year post-doctoral research at the University of California at Los Angeles, he joined IIT Bombay, where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He is also the Chief Investigator for the Centre for Nanoelectronics at IIT Bombay. Dr. Rao has over 200 publications in the area of Electron Devices & Nanoelectronics in refereed international journals and conference proceedings and holds three patents.

Prof. Rao received the coveted Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize in Engineering Sciences in 2005 awarded by the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Govt. of India for his work on Electron Devices. He is an Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices in the CMOS Devices and Technology area and serves on the Editorial boards of IETE Journal of Research, The Open Applied Physics Journal, and the 'Recent Patents in Electrical Engineering" published by the Bentham Science Publishers. Dr.Rao is a Distinguished Lecturer (DL), IEEE Electron Devices Society, a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow, IETE. He received the prestigious Swarnajayanti Fellowship award in 2003-2004, instituted by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India to mark 50 years of India's independence. He is also a recepient of the 2007 IBM Faculty award and the 2008 'Material Research Society of India (MRSI) - ICSC Superconductivity & material Science Prize'. He is a working group member setup by the Department of Information Technology, Govt. of India on Nanotechnology and serves on the programme advisory committees of various national funding agencies in India. Prof. Rao was the organizing committee Chair for the 17th International Conference on VLSI Design and the 14th International Workshop on the Physics of Semiconductor Devices and serves on the program/organizing committees/subcommittees of various international conferences including the IEDM, IEEE Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference, IEEE Conference on Nano-Networks, ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design, 11 th IEEE VLSI Design & Test Symposium among others. He was Chairman, IEEE AP/ED Bombay Chapter during 2002-2003 and currently serves on the executive committee of IEEE Bombay Section besides being the vice-chair, IEEE Asia-Pacific Regions/Chapters Subcommittee.
