Heung-Sik Tae (M 00) was born in Seoul, Korea, on November 14, 1962. He received a B.S. degree in 1986 in electrical engineering from the Seoul National University, Korea. He received a MSEE from the same university in 1988 on the topic of the deposition of diamond-like carbon films using an rf plasma. He received a Ph. D. degree in 1994 in electrical engineering from the Seoul National University, Korea on the topic of  low-temperature silicon epitaxial growth using microwave plasmas.

In 1995, he joined the faculty of Kyungpook National University, where he is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In 1997, he joined the G7 national project for the development of large flat panel displays, especially plasma display panels (PDP), and has published extensively on techniques for the optical characterization of phosphor layers using vacuum ultraviolet (147 or 173 nm) sources. In 2001, he joined the IMT 2000 Korean national project for the development of high efficiency plasma display panels, and also obtained numerous research results on the improvement of luminous efficiency of PDPs and on high speed driving techniques. He received the Outstanding Poster Paper Award in 2002 from The Ninth International Display Workshop (IDW 2002). He has authored or coauthored nearly 100 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. His current research interests include the optical characterization and design of driving waveforms and the related circuitry of flat panel display devices such as plasma display panels, the design of millimeter wave guiding structures, and thick-film processing for millimeter-wave devices. Dr. Tae is a Member of the IEEE and the Society for Information Display (SID).
