IEEE Advertising and Linkage Guidelines
If you are planning to develop an IEEE related web page or to link your page to the IEEE, please read the following:
The IEEE has developed the following guidelines to help IEEE members and staff in constructing consistent linkages into, out of and within our sites. These guidelines have been developed to help in maintaining consistent, easily navigable linkages. The guidelines attempt to meet all situations. If you have issues with any of these guidelines, please contact Jayne Cerone of the IEEE Technical Activities department or Vera Sharoff of the IEEE Regional Activities department.
2.1.1 IEEE Sites All web pages prepared by the IEEE, it's Boards, Entities, or staff. IEEE Entities include but are not limited to: Societies, Sections, Regions, Councils, Chapters, and Student Branches. This also includes Entity subgroups such as Committees, Conferences, and Working Groups. These sites may be located at www.ieee.org, www.ewh.ieee.org, or on any server on behalf of the IEEE.
2.1.2 External Sites
Commercial - A site belonging to a company, corporation, consulting company, professional corporation, or other for-profit organization.
Association - A site belonging to a non-profit or not-for-profit association or organization.
Education - A site affiliated with an accredited college, university, or technical school. This may include sites maintained by individual departments. It does not include social organizations or individuals enrolled at that institution.
Government - A site maintained by a federal or local entity or governing body, including government agencies such as the NIST or EPA.
Personal - A web page belonging to an individual.
2.1.3 Official IEEE Business - For the purposes of web site linkages, official IEEE business is defined but not limited to any sanctioned business relationship between IEEE and another organization. This may include Financial or Information Advantage programs, cooperative agreements among organizations, member services, and conference location information.
2.2 GUIDELINES BY TYPE OF SITE
2.2.1 IEEE Sites - These sites may link freely to other IEEE sites, as well as applicable association sites, education sites and government sites. Links to commercial sites as well as member and non-member personal sites are inappropriate unless necessary to conduct official IEEE business. Exceptions are permitted with explicit permission of the IEEE Executive Committee.
All IEEE sites shall contain a link from a prominent location to the IEEE Home Page. These links must be created using the official IEEE weblink icon. To request this icon, please register at http://www.ieee.org/about/documentation/copyright/logos.htm (see Section 2.3).
Sites may receive awards, from various groups, acknowledging the site or activities of that staff group. Often a link, to the group presenting the award, is requested. Sites may link to the site of that award group; however, caution is urged to ensure that the award is a legitimate award and not simply a marketing program.
2.2.2 External Sites - External sites include all other sites, including the following:
Commercial, Associations, Education, Government, Personal
External sites are welcome to link to the IEEE Home Page. The IEEE does not actively monitor external linkage sites.
To link to the IEEE Home Page, use the official IEEE weblink icon. Please register at http://www.ieee.org/about/documentation/copyright/logos.htm.
To link to another IEEE site using only the URL, no permission is required. If the link is created using an icon, please contact the site administrator for the most appropriate graphic.
To link to Association, Education, and Government sites, as well as Commercial or Personal sites required for official IEEE business, contact that site's administrator. Requirements for linking, if any, are usually minimal. Where appropriate, the courtesy of a pointer back to the IEEE Home Page is requested. The two site administrators may approve these linkages.
To link to Commercial and Personal sites that do not entail official IEEE business, permission is required of the IEEE Executive Committee. Send an e-mail including the name of your site, the name and address of the site you wish to link to, and the reasons for requesting the link to: com-link-perms@ieee.org. Also, contact that site's administrator to determine any permissions/requirements.
IEEE Headquarters will include, in its site map, a universal download area for listing all commercial download sites that may be of use to individuals exploring the IEEE sites. These include Adobe Acrobat, ShockWave, Netscape, Explorer, etc.
The IEEE will provide a set of "popular links." This list of URLs will link directly to key member/volunteer/customer sites, such as membership, conference listings, financial advantage, the IEEE catalog. IEEE Entities will be encouraged to place these links at the appropriate place in their own entity site.
It is the responsibility of each IEEE site administrator to ensure that links are maintained.
2.6 ADVERTISING ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB
Advertising on the World Wide Web is permitted subject to the general IEEE policy on advertising in Section 6.2.9 of IEEE Policy and Procedures, particularly that "the benefits by such advertising are achieved within the bounds of good taste and in a manner consonant with IEEEs scientific and educational objectives".
Additionally, since the Word Wide Web creates the possibility of linkage to other Web sites, every advertiser must provide reasonable assurance that any links to other Web sites which fail to meet IEEEs general policies governing suitable content will not be maintained.
Advertising, as discussed here, includes but is not limited to: commercial ads, promotions, banners, links (with or without icons), and sponsorships.
The placement or acceptance of advertising is the prerogative of the IEEE site. However, advertising must not compromise the IEEE identity or the information being presented. Advertising should not be intrusive.
All IEEE sites that accept advertising, or link to external sites, must publish the IEEE linkage disclaimer
Select IEEE sites may be entitled to an http://www.ieee.org/xyz redirect or "advertising URL". This service is designed for Entity branding, major IEEE projects such as conferences, products, publications, or marketing campaigns. Learn more about IEEE Redirects.
Advertising charges are set by the sponsoring entity in accordance with IEEE Policy 6.5.3. IEEE Publications may also choose to package their web site advertising with their print advertising
Fees accepted for unrelated business activity are subject to income taxes. Unrelated business activity includes advertising, linkage referral fees or other commercial activities unrelated to IEEE's educational and scientific purposes. For questions, please contact Dave Galicki, Manager, IEEE Tax Compliance.
