energy they need. But today's estimates show that our
planet has only 100 years of known coal reserves left.
So, the Swedish company that controls Germany's
immense "Schwartze Pumpe" is determined to make
the best use of this "interim energy source" and
see that the consumption is as efficient and as
environmentally-friendly as possible. Set near the
Polish/Czech border in the former East Germany, this
monster power plant has boilers over 160 meters high. In the
shadow of these behemoths, a new plant is well under
construction. It is said to be the first of its kind to
generate nearly clean power from coal.

IEEE Medal of Honor Recipient (2009): Dr. Robert Dennard

This program highlights the career of the 2009 IEEE

Processing Tells The Story.

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas
in November of 1963. Although an investigation soon
concluded that only one gunman, Lee Harvey
Oswald, shot at President Kennedy, there is
a community of skeptics that exist to this day who think
that there was another gunman. Thirteen years later,
the US Congress Select Committee on Assassinations reopened
an investigation of the President's assassination. The
Committee learned about some recordings of the Dallas Police
radio traffic, and they speculated that somewhere on
these recordings there might be the sounds of
gunfire, perhaps even allowing investigators to
determine how many shots had been fired. In 1982,
the investigation was reopened yet again. Mr. Charles
Rader, an IEEE member, served on the
Committee on Ballistic Acoustics. Our program is based on
the science of "Signal Processing" and discusses
the findings of this committee.

How To Get Congress To Give You $240 Billion

In this program, IEEE-USA's Senior

Activities, Russ Harrison, discusses the
intersection between public policy and engineering. In
2009, Congress focused on engineers and technology
more than at any other point during the past 50
years, perhaps ever. Your elected officials have
been debating major changes to US policy in fields that
employ or affect IEEE members including energy,
space, education, intellectual property
law, immigration, and broadband. This
attention gives us, as professionals,
opportunities, but also poses risks. Learn what
IEEE-USA is doing in Washington to try to make sure Congress
gets it right. And learn some simple things that you can do
to influence your own elected officials.

ComSoc Digital Library

ComSoc Digital Library provides more than
