IEEE Accomplishments – Wai-Choong (Lawrence) Wong started his involvement in IEEE in 1984 as Membership Development Chair of the IEEE Singapore Section. Since then he has taken on numerous volunteer positions at the Section, Chapter and Region 10 level.

Some key accomplishments:

  • Started the conference series, Singapore International Conference on Networks (SICON) in 1989, which subsequently became the International Conference on Networks (ICON) in 2000. This conference series has successfully facilitated collaboration between Singapore Computer Chapter and regional IEEE entities with its hosting across the region.
  • Built a robust, sustainable and empowered Singapore Section during his tenure as Chair that led to significant growth in activities and membership. Chapters grew in strength with enterprising projects. Universities benefited from these with several sponsored and endowed student awards.
  • As Local Arrangements Chair of IEEE GLOBECOM 1995, he led a dedicated team that ensured successful and smooth execution of the conference dealing with challenging needs of the conference and committees.
  • As Region 10 Awards Chair, he started the Region 10 outstanding volunteer awards.
  • As Region 10 Electronic Communications Chair he initiated the IEEE Region 10 website, and rallied the support of councils/sections/chapters across the region to leverage on the newly available EWH server to host their respective websites.

Statement – I believe the need to enhance value to members is of paramount importance to enable IEEE to grow. This is a key challenge facing IEEE volunteers. I intend to enhance the role of the local IEEE entities, working in synergy with Piscataway to meet such challenges and in so doing create meaningful and sustainable benefits to members. The strategies to foster vibrancy at the volunteer level and value enhancement at the membership level will include:

  • Putting in place mechanisms to guide, advice and assist IEEE volunteers to meet the needs of members
  • Initiating strategic programs and projects to seed and catalyze interest, excitement and vibrancy in Sections and Chapters
  • Developing and adopting effective, accountable and transparent entity governance
  • Leveraging on internet technologies to bring services to members and to facilitate sharing and networking
  • Building stronger linkages and awareness between local entities and IEEE headquarters
  • Promoting Distinguished Lecture programs and TAB Colloquia for the benefit of larger community of members across Region 10
