PISCATAWAY, N.J., 9 Nov. – Lewis Terman, IBM Research Emeritus, IBM Research Division, Yorktown Heights, N.Y., U.S.A, has been selected as 2007 IEEE president-elect. Pending acceptance of the Teller's Committee report by the IEEE Board of Directors, Terman will begin serving as IEEE president on 1 Jan. 2008. He will succeed 2007 IEEE President Leah H. Jamieson, Dean of the Purdue University College of Engineering.

Of the 277,032 ballots mailed, 38,691 valid ballots were returned (13.97 percent). This compares to the 2005 return of 14.41 percent, but excludes the IEEE-USA categories.  Of the 176,296 separate ballots mailed for the two IEEE-USA categories, 25,221 valid ballots were returned (14.31 percent). All results are unofficial until the IEEE Board of Directors accepts the report of the Teller's Committee during the November meeting series next week.

The other candidate for IEEE president-elect was John Vig, consultant, System Planning Corporation; Technical Advisory Board, SiTime Corporation, Colts Neck, N.J., U.S.A.  Both candidates were nominated by the IEEE Board of Directors. Of the members who voted, 20,656 selected Terman, 16,337 selected Vig.

Terman, an IEEE Fellow, has been active as an IEEE volunteer and member for almost 50 years. A member of the IEEE Board of Directors three of the last five years, other past leadership positions include president of the Electron Devices and Solid-State Circuits societies, Technical Activities vice president, Technical Activities Board treasurer (two terms) and chair of the Meetings and Conferences Committee. Terman has also been involved with the IEEE Awards Board for over three decades, and served as chair of the presentation and publicity committee in 2005.  He also has served as special issue guest editor of four IEEE publications.

Retiring from IBM’s Research Division in 2006 after 45 years, Terman currently holds the title of IBM Research Emeritus. His past work focused on solid-state circuits, semiconductor technology, memory design and technology, digital and analog circuits and processor design.  He received nine major IBM technical awards, including three corporate awards. Terman was elected to the IBM Academy of Technology in 1991, and served as president in 2001-2003.
