PISCATAWAY, N.J. (5 August,
2008) -Governments and
citizens around the world share a
concern that today’s natural
resources may not be around for
tomorrow’s future
generations. There are
varying degrees of activism;
however, certain subtopics within the
global energy crisis such as
rising gas prices and the environmental
impact of carbon dioxide
have been garnering the largest amount
of attention.
IEEE, the world’s
largest technical professional society,
has pinpointed thought
leaders throughout the globe to discuss
key topics surrounding
today’s international energy
crisis. Selected
members of IEEE are experts on power and
energy and have spent years
researching critical topics to help
educate the global
community. These IEEE members come from
some of the world’s largest
educational and business
institutions. Identified angles
include the following:
-
Energy Policy - How should we
be using alternative
energies, including electric energy?
-
Overcoming the Gas Price Hike
- As we continue to
pay more and more at the pump, IEEE
addresses why prices
are so high and what we can do to
cope --- and possibly
halt further price hikes in the long
term.
-
Carbon Dioxide - Uncovering
the myths and truths
behind global warming.
-
“Clean” Coal and
Other Sustainable
Resources - Breaking new ground,
coal is another alternative
energy to consider in an effort to
minimize our impact on the
environment.
-
U.S.
Dependence on Foreign Oil -
The United States has
a sizeable dependence on foreign
oil, as it makes up 40
percent of total U.S. energy.
Why? What can civilians do
to create change?
“Our industry is at a
critical point, facing numerous
challenges, like an
increasing world population, demands for
higher living standards, and
a pressing need to reduce
pollution,” said Wanda
Reder, President of the IEEE Power &
Energy Society.
“Furthermore, we must avert
global warming and most likely change
the energy mix away from fossil fuels
with expanded development of
sustainable energies such as wind,
solar, biomass, geothermal,
nuclear and energy from the oceans.”

Through its more than
375,000 members in 160 countries, the
organization is a leading
authority on a wide variety of areas
ranging from aerospace
systems, computers and
telecommunications to biomedical
engineering, electric power and consumer
electronics. Dedicated to
the advancement of technology, the IEEE
publishes 30 percent of the
world’s literature in the
electrical and electronics engineering
and computer science fields, and has
developed nearly 900 active
industry standards. The organization
