Our World: Can We Sustain Its Natural Resources?

PISCATAWAY, N.J., USA  (25  August, 2008) -  For years, scientists and world leaders have been pondering the topic of the sustainable world. How long will our water and air supply remain endless? How does the global climate change affect the animal ecosystem? Is there anything that the collective worldwide society can do to preserve the resources that are often taken for granted? Sustainable World

Technology has been exponentially helpful in identifying environmental trends, as well as identifying isolated variables that impact the world and its climate. Members of IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional society, are active in global initiatives, such as Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), and have spent years researching these issues. These IEEE members come from some of the world’s largest educational and business institutions, and have researched critical sustainable world angles, including:

  • Using technology to understand natural disasters;
  • Identifying factors and effects of climate change on today’s global environment;
  • Water efficiency and availability in developing countries;
  • A comparison of deforestation in developing vs. developed nations;
  • Global thought leaders working together to promote a sustainable world.

“Through the use of earth observation technology, we identified numerous variables that are affecting our sustainable resources and climate,” said Jay Pearlman, Ph.D., chair, IEEE Committee on Earth Observation.  “Total global participation for this is not optional, it is mandatory.  We must work together to share information – only then will we have the full data of the past, present and future environment.”
