Nomination Form and Application Information

The IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) seeks qualified professionals from industry, government and academic sectors to serve as Program Evaluators (PEV's) to assist in accrediting Engineering Programs at U.S. colleges for the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc (ABET).

Participation in the accreditation process for IEEE/ABET engineering programs is a major responsibility of the IEEE. This activity depends on the efforts of motivated and qualified program evaluators and the support provided by their employers.

Service as a program evaluator offers the opportunity for members of the profession to contribute to the achievement of high quality educational standards of engineering programs, gain insight into the characteristics and trends of education engineering, and interact with peers from higher education and industry.

IEEE is a Participating Body of ABET. ABET's purpose is the promotion and advancement of engineering and engineering technology education with a view to furthering the public welfare through the development of better-educated engineers, engineering technologists and engineering technicians. ABET also assists academic institutions in planning their educational programs.

Qualified Evaluator Candidates Required
The IEEE EAB Committee on Engineering Accreditation Activities (CEAA) carries out the selection, education, and evaluator assignment processes for the IEEE EAB. The CEAA seeks evaluator candidates who are qualified professionals (see qualifications)  especially those from industry, who are willing to serve IEEE and ABET for up to five years.

Evaluator candidates are required for the following ABET-accredited engineering programs. IEEE is the lead society for these programs.

  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Optical Engineering
  • Telecommunications Engineering

Industrial Participation
Participation in the accreditation process by talented industrial professionals will ensure that the requirements of industry are addressed. Employer sponsorship and support is crucial for the recruitment of industrial program evaluator candidates.

Expenses - Accreditation Visits
Expenses related to training and accreditation visits are reimbursed by ABET.

Evaluator Education Workshop
Prior to participation in accreditation visits, selected IEEE evaluator candidates are required to attend an ABET-sponsored one and a half day Evaluator Education Workshop. (2010 workshop information listed below).

Workshop Expenses
Selected IEEE evaluators will have their expenses covered for the ABET workshop. These expenses, including all materials, travel, lodging and meals are covered by ABET.

2010 Workshop Schedule
Below are the dates and locations of the upcoming ABET training sessions:

  • 10-11 April 2010 - Baltimore, MD
  • 22-23 May 2010 - Baltimore, MD
  • 19-20 June 2010 - Louisville, KY (in conjunction with the ASEE Conference)

Evaluation Visits
Following attendance of an Evaluator Education Workshop, evaluators may participate in accreditation visits. During their term of appointment, evaluators usually participate in one accreditation evaluation visit per year.   Visits are scheduled during the fall and are of two or three days duration. The expenses associated with the accreditation visits are fully covered or reimbursed by ABET.

Deadline for Applications - 13 November 2009
Applications must be submitted on the ABET website by 13 November 2009 for the 2010 academic year. Applications are reviewed during the January / February 2010 IEEE meetings. Accepted or declined notification will be sent to applicants by 1 March 2010.

Qualified individuals are invited to apply; nominations of qualified candidates are encouraged.
