MGA SCOOP, April 2008 A monthly newsletter for IEEE Section, Council, Subsection, and Area Chairs, Treasurers, Newsletter Editors, and Webmasters
Reminder: All previous reference to IEEE Regional Activities should now be referenced as IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA). Please remember to update your web page and other documentation.
IEEE LAUNCHES MEMBERNET ONLINE DIRECTORY The IEEE has launched an online member directory designed to encourage peer-to-peer networking within IEEE membership. memberNet is the first step in a series of next-generation capabilities that will encourage virtual collaborations between members with similar technical interests, regardless of geography. While the basic member profile in memberNet contains every member's name and membership grade, each member can indicate by check mark what additional information they would like to also have appear. These may include technical interests, local Section, or IEEE Society affiliation. The memberNet directory, and its opt-in management, is accessible from myIEEE, at <http://www.ieee.org/myieee>. For more information about IEEE memberNet, visit <http://www.ieee.org/membernet>. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN - IEEE SECTIONS CONGRESS 2008 As a reminder, IEEE Sections Congress 2008 will be held 19 – 22 September at the Quebec City Convention Center in Quebec City, Canada. The theme of the event is "Celebrating Volunteer Achievements Worldwide." The three program tracks are: Membership; Section Management; and Section/Chapter Activities. The registration web site for SC08 will is now available. If you are planning on attending, please ensure that you have the appropriate travel documents. Visit <http://www.ieee.org/sc2008> for more information. OU WEBSITE VERIFICATION REQUEST Today, IEEE has over 1,300 websites hosted on the IEEE web hosting server. Some of these websites have not been updated to reflect the current year activities. In order to ensure that our websites are providing relevant information, each Region, Council, Section, Subsection and Chapter is being asked to check the lists of their organizational unit websites and verify if whether or not they are outdated. Please visit <http://ewh.ieee.org/ewh/> and select your Region from the "OU Websites" menu. If you do not see your Organizational Unit's website listed, please contact ewh-webmaster@ieee.org so that the link to your website can be added to the list. If your website is not listed please contact ewh-webmaster@ieee.org and include the link to your website. FEBRUARY MEMBERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS IEEE membership reached 302,260 in February 2008, an increase of 1.3 percent compared to February 2007. Specifically, higher grade memberships are up 1.3 percent, student memberships have increased 1.1 percent. Society membership decreased 1.0 percent. Complete details are available in the Membership Development Report at <http://www.ieee.org/mdprogreport>. In order to access this site, you must use your IEEE Web Account. If you do not have an IEEE Web Account, please go to <http://www.ieee.org/portal/pages/web/accounts/index.html>. MGA AWARD NOMINATIONS The MGA Board is soliciting nominations for Outstanding Small and Large Sections. Additionally, nominations are being accepted for the MGA William W. Middleton Distinguished Service Award. Nominations for the Outstanding Section award are due on 15 May 2008 and nominations for the William W. Middleton Distinguished Service award are due on 31 May 2008. Additional information is available at the following URL: <http://www.ieee.org/web/volunteers/mga/home/Awards/index.html> IEEE TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL CHAPTERS As of 1 January 2008, the IEEE Engineering Management Society became the IEEE Technology Management Council (TMC). All IEEE Engineering Management Technical Chapters have been renamed IEEE Technology Management Chapters. The reporting requirements for Technical Chapters of IEEE Technical Councils are same as those for Technical Chapters of IEEE Societies. IEEE Technical Councils do not have individual members as Societies do. Instead, they are supported by IEEE Societies. The IEEE Technology Management Council consists of the following member societies: Aerospace & Electronic Systems, Broadcast Technology Society, Circuits & Systems Society, Communications Society, Computer Society, Electron Devices Society, Industrial Electronics Society, Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, Professional Communication Society, Reliability Society, Signal Processing Society, Solid State Circuits Society, Systems Man and Cybernetics Society, Vehicular Technology Society. If your Section has members of any of the above societies and if your Section has an IEEE Technology Management Chapter these members are now members of the local TMC Chapter. These individuals may begin to receive communication from the TMC Chapter informing them of their activities. IEEE AWARD THAT RECOGNIZES ETHICAL PRACTICES Do you know of an IEEE member or an organization employing IEEE members that has shown exemplary ethical behavior or practices, or successfully advocated them? Then consider nominating that person or company for the IEEE Award for Distinguished Ethical Practices. The deadline for nominations is 1 July. Nominations must come from the general membership of the IEEE. Members of the IEEE Board of Directors, the IEEE Awards Board, The IEEE Ethics and Member Conduct Committee (EMCC), and IEEE staff may not submit nominations. Nor are self-nominations permitted. The nomination form is available on the EMCC Web site at <http://www.ieee.org/ethics> and through the “Other Awards Programs” link on the IEEE Awards Web site at <http://www.ieee.org/awards>. NEW IEEE ANNUAL ELECTION DEADLINES The IEEE Board of Directors approved several deadline changes related to the IEEE annual election, beginning in 2008. Most, but not all, of the annual election deadlines have been moved up by one month. All ballots will be mailed to eligible voting members by 1 August and completed ballots must now be received by the election vendor by 1 October, 12:00 noon Central Daylight Time USA (17:00 GMT). Review the new IEEE Annual election deadlines at <http://www.ieee.org/web/aboutus/corporate/election/index.html>. For more information, contact Carrie Loh, Corporate Activities, at c.loh@ieee.org. As a friendly reminder, when offering candidates in the annual election the opportunity to be published in any IEEE publication in connection with their candidacy, please offer the same opportunity to their opponents in the publication as specified in IEEE Policy 13.3.C. NATIONAL SOCIETIES IN YOUR COUNTRY: IEEE Section leaders in Regions 7-10 are encouraged to work together with National Societies in their respective country. Areas of cooperation can include technical and social meetings, conferences and exhibitions, distinguished lecturers, joint awards and seminars.
