1) MEMBER AND GEOGRAPHIC ACTIVITIES

As per the IEEE Board of Directors a name change for IEEE Regional Activities has been approved. All previous reference to IEEE Regional Activities should now be referenced as IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA). The change in name also represents a change in the board’s organization and a new focus on membership and member development. For more information on this name change, please see the latest issue of “The Institute” - http://www.theinstitute.ieee.org/ and click on “More than a Name Change”. 2) REMINDER - ANNUAL REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

In order to maintain viability and to ensure that all geographic units are meeting the needs of their members, each unit is required to submit annual reports of the following items:

  • Meeting activity – The minimum meeting requirements are 5 meetings for Sections and Subsections; 2 technical meetings for Chapters; 2 meetings for Affinity Groups. This information can be submitted online via the electronic L31 meeting report form http://www.ieee.org/L31
  • Current officers – Please use the online officer report form to report your new officers within your geographic unit. The form is available at:  http://ewh.ieee.org/forms/scs/interactofficer.php.

For questions regarding officer reporting, please contact scs-officer-report@ieee.org

  • Financial activity – Each Region, Section and Geographic Council Treasurer is responsible for submitting both the bank account disclosure form and the 2007 financial report for their unit and any subunits (Subsection, Chapters and/or  Affinity Groups) to IEEE as soon as possible, but not later than the dates noted below.

31 January 2008 – Submission of the Bank Account Disclosure Form

22 February 2008 – Submission the 2007 Geographic Unit Financial Report

The 2007 Geographic Unit Financial Report and instructions are available online:

3) IEEE TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL

As of January 1, 2008, the IEEE Engineering Management Society will become the IEEE Technology Management Council (TMC). All IEEE Engineering Management Technical Chapters will be renamed IEEE Technology Management Chapters. For example, the IEEE Buffalo Section Engineering Management Chapter will be renamed the IEEE Buffalo Section Technology Management Chapter. The reporting requirements for Technical Chapters of IEEE Technical Councils are same as those for Technical Chapters of IEEE Societies.

4) IEEE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2008 APPLICATION DEADLINES

The IEEE Foundation, Incorporated, the philanthropic arm of the IEEE, is committed to improving the technological literacy of society from childhood through adulthood. One way the IEEE Foundation seeks to achieve this goal is by awarding grants to new and innovative projects. During 2008, unsolicited applications will be accepted in three cycles from IEEE units and other organizations working in areas of relevance and importance to the IEEE and its membership. Projects should achieve one or more of the following objectives:

  • Improve primary and secondary science, technology, and math learning
  • Encourage pre-university students to consider engineering as a career path
  • Increase the public’s understanding of the role of engineers and technology in society
  • Preserve the history of IEEE associated technologies
  • Tap the technological expertise of IEEE members
  • Demonstrate ability to be replicated

Application deadlines:

  • 4 January 2008 for March Meeting
  • 18 April 2008 for June Meeting
  • 5 Sep 2008 for November Meeting

Before submitting the online application, please review “How to Apply for a Grant” (http://www.ieee.org/organizations/foundation/grants.html). All applications will be considered for funding by both the IEEE Foundation Board of Directors and the IEEE Life Members Committee. Questions should be directed to the IEEE Foundation Administrator at +1 732 981 3435 or foundation-office@ieee.org.
