GETTING INVOLVED WITH STUDENT BRANCHES A Branch Mentor is a Section member employed in industry who is appointed by the Section in consultation with the Student Branch to provide guidance, serve as a liaison between the student members and the Section, and encourage new graduates to stay active in the IEEE. This link between the Branch and the Section is important to help bridge the gap between individuals who are just entering the field and experienced engineers who have been out of school and working in the field for a number of years. Some examples of Branch Mentor activities:
Sections can work with Student Branches by offering assistance with planning an S-PAC or S-PAVe. The IEEE established these two programs to increase professional awareness among Student Branch members. Student Branches can organize an S-PAC, a one-day conference organized by students, during which speakers give presentations on career-related topics. Experience has shown that support from faculty, school administration, and Section members is essential to a successful conference. The S-PAVe program was established to give Student Branch members an opportunity to develop a project proposal, manage a budget and develop leadership skills. Past S-PAVes have included resume workshops and interviewing technique seminars.
How can Sections get involved?
Section members can be speakers, or can help
Student Branch organizers find experts on
the professional topics at an S-PAC; Section
officers can help the students learn about
the IEEE network and possible sources of
funding available. Interaction between Sections
and Student Branches will help the
Sections develop student leaders into future
Section volunteers/officers.
