| Walking Tour of Historic Québec City | ||

Take a step back in time and visit the only walled city north of Mexico. This enclave of cobbled lanes and winding streets weaves together monuments, museums, churches, shops and outdoor cafes. See and feel the unique "old world" ambiance of Québec City. Old Québec will offer you pleasant surprises at every turn. The tour begins at the hotel and ends at Place Royale, the cradle of French civilization in North America. This tour includes a ride in the Funicular, a safe, inclined cable railway that links upper town to lower town. After the walking tour you will have the time to explore the boutiques, restaurants and hidden charms of Old Québec. Shoppers will be delighted by the excellent selection of antiques, local art and specialty goods available within walking distance. Please be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes.

As you travel towards the island, commentary will be given by your professional guide on the shoreline and the settlements where forests abounded with game and fertile soils. During your tour, you will discover Le Jardin des Arts, an art gallery that represents works of 75 local artists. Your next stop is the Manoir Mauvide Genest; a Quebec interpretation site on the seignorial regime of New France. The tour continues towards Le Domaine Steinbach, a bio-certified farm operation located on a 15-hectare (30-acre) estate along the St. Lawrence River. The site is composed of an ancestral home, a 4,000-tree apple orchard, ducks and geese, a cider house, a vinegar factory, and an interpretation centre with an open kitchen for processing home-grown products. A guided visit of the site in a New France ambiance will be provided as well and sample tastings of their products (ciders, mustards, patés, jelly etc.)

Today, we will discover the streets of Old Québec (Vieux-Québec), proclaimed "World Heritage Treasure" by UNESCO in 1985. Place Royale and the National Assembly will provide insight into a rich past which blends with the daily life of this charming city. Included in this tour will be stops at historic sites such as: the Plains of Abraham - location of the decisive and final battle between the armies of Montcalm and Wolfe, and Le Petit Champlain - the oldest commercial street in North America. After a full morning of discovery, we will take you to the magnificent Manoir Montmorency to enjoy a delicious lunch with a panoramic view. The mansion, located just 15 minutes from Québec City, is perched on the cliff next to the impressive 272-foot- high Montmorency waterfalls. On the cable car ride up to the top of the falls, take in a view like no other - the St. Lawrence River, Orléans Island and the city all in plain view. Don't forget to bring your camera… the photo opportunities will be spectacular! Part of the tour will be walking and part by motorcoach.

You will then visit the Ste-Anne de Beaupré Basilica, admired for its vast proportions and its superb stained-glass windows. Neo-roman in style, the interior houses numerous artistic treasures. The basilica is the destination for many pilgrims because of the many miracles that have taken place there... Heading back to Québec city, you will travel on the the well-known “Chemin Royal”, a historic road built under the French Regime. Traditionally-roofed houses and numerous root cellars that dot each side of the road are among the beauties of the Beaupré coast. You will hear about the evolution of French architecture in North America and much more. At the “Atelier Paré”, a economuseum of legends, you will hear about traditional Québec legends interpreted through the medium of wooden sculptures. Pieces of pine, basswood and butternut are transformed before your very eyes into attractive, functional objects. At the “Albert Gilles Copper Art Museum”, follow the Gilles Family through the captivating world of copper art and be seduced by the “art of repoussé”, interpreted by the craftsman Albert Gilles whose talent served prestigious people like Pope Pius XII, Walt Disney.

This walking tour proceeds along "Rue Saint-Paul" in the Québec City Old Port district. The street is well known to antique collectors for its many antique shops, but also offers a variety of boutiques, art galleries and French coffee shops. It's easy to loose track of time as you discover one treasure after another. You will enjoy some time to shop and explore in Place Royale - the birthplace of French civilization in North America and one of the oldest settlements on the continent. The architecture and narrow streets bring back four centuries of history. A famous staircase is tucked between two rows of buildings. It existed in 1660 and was quite risky at the time, known as "l'Escalier Casse-cou" in French, and named the "Breakneck Staircase" in English. The staircase brings you down on rue du Petit-Champlain, where the city was first founded. The tour begins at the Convention Center and ends at Place Royale, the cradle of French civilization in North America, located in the lower part of Old Québec. This tour includes a ride in the funicular, a safe, inclined cable railway that links Upper Town to Lower Town. After the tour you will have more time to explore the boutiques and hidden charms of Old Québec. Please be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and to bring your camera. The tour will take place rain or shine.
