The Society focuses on microwave theory, techniques & applications, as they relate to components, devices, circuits, integrated circuits, multi-circuit assemblies, packages, sub-systems, and systems (usually excluding antennas) involving the generation, amplification, processing, modulation, control, transmission, reception, detection, & demodulation of microwave signals. Microwave theory & techniques also apply to the interaction & interface of microwave signals with digital & optical circuitry &interconnecting transmission media. Microwave theory & techniques relate to & are applicable to electromagnetic waves typically in the frequency region between 0.1-1000 Ghz; other spectral regions & wave types are included within the scope of the Society whenever basic microwave theory and techniques can yield useful results. Generally, this occurs in the theory and application of wave propagation in structures with dimensions comparable to a wavelength & in the related techniques for measurement, analysis& design. Examples are optical waves in suitably confined structures, as well as the applications of acoustic, magnetic, & domain waves to microwave systems.

The IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society has 103 chapters and members in 70 countries worldwide. Their 8 conferences include the annual International Microwave Symposium and the co-located RFIC Symposium.

Society membership includes:

- IEEE Microwave Magazine (print & electronic)
- IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology (electronic)
