The Society focuses on the theory and application of filtering, coding, transmitting, estimating, detecting, analyzing, recognizing, synthesizing, recording, and reproducing signals by digital or analog devices of techniques. The term "signal" includes audio, video, speech, image, communication, geophysical, sonar, radar, medical, musical, and other signals.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society has 90 chapters and members in 71 countries worldwide. Their 12 conferences include the IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology and the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing.
