Graduate Student Fellowship Program

The IEEE Photonics Society established the Graduate Student Fellowship Program to provide Graduate Fellowships to outstanding Society student members pursuing graduate education within the Society field of interest (electro-optics, lasers, photonics, optics, or closely related fields). Up to ten Fellowships of $5000 each will be awarded, based on the student membership in each of the main geographical regions:

Americas - Europe/Mid-East/Africa - Asia/Pacific

Prize:Up to ten Fellowships of $5,000 each will be awarded every year.

Students should normally be in their penultimate year of study at the time of application and be planning to submit their thesis on a timescale of 6 to 18 months after the application is submitted (i.e. those applying in May 2008 would normally expect to defend their thesis during 2009).

Schedule: In a given year, application packages will be due at the Photonics Society Executive Office by 30 May and recipients will be notified by 30 July of the same year. The Fellowships will be presented at the Photonics Society Annual Meeting.

Award Committee: The Society Membership Committee will select the Fellowship recipients.

StudentTravel Grants

The Photonics Society provides 10 Travel Grants annually  to enable students who present papers to travel to the following conferences: Photonics Society Annual Meeting, OFC (Optical Fiber Communication Conference), CLEO (Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics), CLEO/Pacific Rim, CLEO/Europe, OECC (Optoelectronics and Communications Conference) and ECOC (European Conference on Optical Communication).

A recipient should be a full time degree-seeking student, sponsored by a Society member, who is the first author and presenter of the paper.

Applications are due approximately 2-3 months before the particular meeting. Applicants should include a sponsorship letter from the faculty advisor, a short statement (200 words or less), describing the significance of the work to be presented, and a travel budget indicating the availability of sufficient funds to supplement the Society award. Applicants should indicate their Society membership status. Preference will be given to Society student members. The recipients will each receive a minimum of $500 and up to $1500 towards travel and lodging expenses to the conference location and a complementary conference registration.

The Photonics Society Students Travel Grants committee will notify the recipients about six weeks prior to the conference date.
