SSCS Chapters Meet and Discuss Activities

Half of SSCS Chapter Chairs met February 8 in San Francisco to discuss the work of their local chapters, providing technical speakers in their communities.

SSCS Chapter Chairs ChatShown from left to right are Jerry Lin, Bruce Hecht, Shen-Iuan Liu, Jan Van der Spiegel, and Alvin Loke discussing tips for managing chapters. 11 chapter chairs reviewed their speakers and activities for 2004.

Bruce Hecht announced two upcoming meetings in Boston on Wireless Personal Network Considerations by Ray Barrett, of Maxim and A Novel Architecture for Fast Self-Calibration of High-Speed, High-Accuracy ADCs by Dr. John McNeil, of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Shen-Iuan Liu reported that in January, the Taipei Chapter hosted a preview and rehearsal for the 15 papers from Taipei that were selected for presentation at the ISSCC in February. IN 2004  Taiepei sponsored a local design contest that attracted 415 teams in seven categories. Three short courses they organized last year drew attendance over 150 for each.

Fort Collins Chapter reports Alvin Loke reported that the Fort Collins Chapter has hosted 20 meetings since its inception including four SSCS Distinguished Lecutrers. Tutorials are popular because they give people a chance to quickly use what they learn. Two tutorials were "Signal Integrity Consideration & Analysis" by Minh Quach (Agilent Technologies) and "Introduction to Deep Submicron CMOS Device Technology & Its Impact on Circuit Design" by Alvin Loke, Tin Tin Wee & Jim Pfiester (Agilent Technologies). Meetings draw between 35 and 100 with better attendance when meetings are located near high tech companies rather than on the local university campus. Now it is third year, the Fort Collins Chapter is looking to recruit a new officer or two for the future.

Zhihua Wang reported two January 2005 events hosted by the Beijing Chapter; Georges Gielen, spoke on  Analog Performance Modeling for Analog Circuit Synthesis and David Tse on Fundamentals of Wireless Communications. Last year the chapter co-sponsored the 2004 International Conference on Solid-State and Integrated-Circuit Technology.
