What is a GIF file?
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is the file format commonly used to display graphics and images in HTML documents over the World Wide Web. GIFs are low resolution (72 dpi) and use a compression formula designed to minimize file size and electronic transfer time. This format is ideal for images with areas of flat color. GIFs are not scalable; they are created to exact size for placement on Web page layouts. GIFs are measured by pixel width and height since monitors are measured in pixels.

What is the URL beneath the Web Ads used for?
When placed on a Web site, all Web Ads must be linked back to the URL listed beneath the ad on the Browse Web Ads page. These Web pages at these URLs contain full information on the products or offers being advertised.

PDF's created by IEEE Marketing Services follow the IEEE Spectrum guideline for creating PDF's for print. View the Adobe Acrobat Distiller settings here.

What do the abbreviations 4C, 2C and 1C mean?
These abbreviations refer to how many ink colors are used to compose a print ad.

4C: 4 Color Process - a print ad that uses the standard press colors of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black to simulate a large number of different colors.

2C: ad was created using only 2 Colors. Our 2 Color ads are composed of Black and Magenta. These two colors are representative of any two possible color combinations. If you wanted to run a 2C ad in other Spot colors, tell your printer which color plate should represent which alternate Spot color.

1C: ads are 1 color, Black.

Can I use my own PMS spot colors for 2 Color ads?
Yes, the 2 Color ads (2C) are composed of Black and Magenta. These two color choices are only representative of any two possible color combinations. If you wanted to run a 2C ad in other Spot colors, tell your printer which color plate should print as which color. For instance, Black can remain Black and the Magenta color can represent PMS185, a common bright red Spot Color. It is recommended that Black remain Black, since it carries most of the body copy of our ads and it would be best to keep that readable in a dark color like Black.

What is a Process Color?
Process colors are reproduced by printing overlapping dots (halftone screens) of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) inks to simulate a large number of different colors. To create blue, for example, you combine cyan dots and magenta dots. Your eyes merge the cyan and magenta to perceive the color blue.

What is a Spot Color?
Spot colors are printed with premixed inks on a printing press. You can choose from among hundreds of different spot-color inks.

A spot color printed at 100% is a solid color and has no dot pattern. A tint is a lightened spot and is created by printing smaller halftone dots of the base color. This is also called screening the color.

What does PMS mean?
Often referred to as PMS, the Pantone Matching System is the most popular color matching system in the printing industry. PMS is considered SPOT COLOR. A true PMS color is defined by a mixture of inks that will provide a specific color (e.g. PMS185 is a common bright red). Pantone, PMS and the Pantone Matching System are trademarks of Pantone, Inc.

How long may I use these ads?
PDF's are valid for 90 days from the initial date of download. After that time, please return to the IEEE Online Promotional Library to download the most recent files. When you receive a QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign file on CD-ROM, a "Valid Though Date" will be issued to you. The standard valid period is 90 days. After this date, please return to the IEEE Online Promotional Library to request updated print ads.

What is a "Valid Through Date"?
As IEEE programs and product lines are constantly being updated with new information we can only affirm validity for a set period of time. When you receive a Print ad, a "Valid Though Date" will be issued to you. The standard valid period is 90 days.

Can an Ad be placed after its "Valid Through Date" has expired?
No. If an ad in your possession has a "Valid Through Date" which has expired, do not place the ad. If you still wish to run the ad, contact us and we will either confirm the ad is to be discarded or issue you an extension. The IEEE Promotional Library will remove ads from availability as they expire.

Are any of the Print Ads available in PC compatible format?
Yes. Adobe Acrobat format may be used across computing platforms. QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign CS2 files are supplied in Macintosh format only.

What will I receive when I request a Print ad?
Ads requested in PDF format are available for download immediately through this site, following registration.

For native file format print requests, you will receive a Macintosh formatted QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesig file on CD-ROM. In addition, you will receive any images and fonts used to create the ad. A "Valid Through Date" will be issued to you. You are not permitted to alter ads, print or Web, in any way. Please be sure to read the Terms & Conditions agreement referring to usage rights.

How will my Print Ad request be shipped?
Ads requested in PDF format are available for download immediately through this site, following registration.

For native QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign file requests: If you are within the IEEE offices in Piscataway, New Jersey or New York city, your Print Ad will come to you on CD-ROM via inter-office mail. If you are located elsewhere, within or outside of the United States your Ad will be delivered via standard mail, so delivery times may vary.

What does the F.P.O. Watermark on the print ads mean?
F.P.O. means "for placement only" or "for position only." This industry-standard term refers to low-quality photos or art used to indicate placement and scaling on a layout, but not intended for reproduction. You must request an ad and receive print-ready file to have it print properly in your publication. The web ads are not F.P.O. because they are final web-ready GIF files downloadable from this Web site.
