Empowering IEEE Engineers during Changing Economic Times

Engineering employment is affected by economic cycles and the introduction of disruptive technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFId), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Next Generation Flight System, Space Exploration commercialization, Smart Electrical Grid implementation, and rapid evolution of electronic information. World factors such as the European Union member financial crisis, Asian currency changes, and design/manufacturing consolidations in a contracting world economy have affected demand for engineers. IEEE members may be self employed consultants or work in government, academia, or industry jobs. All of these jobs require cutting-edge, advanced skills to compete. Focusing on the U.S. engineering employment, IEEE Region 3 has established a training program to address issues in three local areas. The IEEE Region 3 program proposed to develop a coordinated industry relations contact, beginning with the critical Sections, and provide employment assistance/career development program training for unemployed or underemployed engineers. The program intent is to train Region IEEE members in delivering employment assistance/career development services through companies that employ IEEE members. The program success depends upon dedicated IEEE members who will participate and contact prospective employers to increase IEEE membership value by providing this direct unemployment service.
IEEE Membership Benefits for General and Student Members: Collaborations between Chapters and Student Branch

This poster describes the benefits of IEEE membership, especially in activities involving collaborations between Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMB) and Circuits and Systems (CAS) Chapters, as well as Student Branches in Indonesia. IEEE has many types of interesting membership benefits for both general and student members. The highlighted benefits include: publication resources (IEEE magazines, newsletters, myIEEE member portal, carrier services, eBooks, outline and abstracts of IEEEXplore), involvement in professional organization and activities, and various types of conferences. Brief descriptions on some collaborative activities will be presented that include activities for members and student members, with their associated promotional materials. Examples of some local meetings and national seminars will also be included.
Achieving Excellence Through Section/Chapter Collaboration

This poster will present the experience of IEEE Vancouver Section in Section-Chapter collaboration. A successful Section and Chapter leadership system established over years has led to two major Section awards and Chapter awards and recognitions. Vancouver Section has been awarded the IEEE Canada's Exemplary Section Award and the MGA Outstanding Section Award, both for performance in 2009. This is a result of outstanding work of all volunteers within the Section, including students, and continuous mutual support through training, mentorship, and ongoing communication. The Section started a number of novel initiatives to enhance services to members by establishing new Chapters and strengthening ties with local industry. This is achieved through quality technical meetings involving industrial partners and local experts, attractive social and networking events, and industry recognitions.
Building a Robust Volunteer Leadership Pipeline through Social Systems

Every Section and Chapter benefits from the energy, enthusiasm, and expertise of their volunteer leaders. In today’s networked world, we have the opportunity to take advantage of social systems to recruit and activate new volunteers. This poster session will show how to build a robust pipeline to recruit, train, promote, and empower volunteers in effective assignments. Our experience in the IEEE Boston Section resulted in over 200 volunteers throughout Section and Chapter leadership. With these tools, your group can also gain from fresh ideas and outstanding people joining your team.
Career Development for Students and Young Professionals through GOLD Activities

Tokyo GOLD was established in November 2008 as the first Japanese GOLD Affinity Group. Since 2009, Tokyo GOLD organized “Career Development Workshop” and “Career Development Essay Contest” annually, as two major events for young students and professionals with Japan Council Women in Engineering (WIE) and Student Branches. The workshop and essay contest aim to raise awareness of young professional members’ future paths and relevant skills and to share the experiences through group discussions and rethinking individual’s own career and skill, respectively. Additionally, Tokyo GOLD will organize a STEP (Student Transition & Elevation Partnership) program in February. This poster will demonstrate how to launch GOLD activities for facilitating the transition from student member to young professional by introducing the opportunities and benefits of IEEE membership.
Hierarchical Harmony in Section and Chapter Activities: A Key to Sustainable Growth

The hierarchal structure of IEEE has always been beneficial in reaching out to its members. Sections and Chapters serve as an interface between members and IEEE. The growth of the Chapters and Sections symbiotically depend on each other. It is, therefore, imperative for Sections to encourage the growth of Chapters; be it in the form of appreciation, freedom in making policy decisions, or addressing grievances. A Chapter should take the responsibility to organize programs according to needs of its members. Sections should organize programs to take care of the needs of those members who are not attached to any Chapter. Forming an executive committee with a correct balance of industry professionals and academicians promotes the overall growth of Chapters, as well as the Section. Keeping the members well informed and allowing them to make suggestions ensures the foundation of new ideas. Furthermore, allowing non-members to participate in Chapter and Section programs may prove useful in attracting new members.
Harmonizing Growth with Humanitarian Activities

Kerala Section, located in the historic spices trade route of the lower South-West Coast of India, is a very active Section, with diverse activities in the technical, professional, student, and humanitarian domains. Awarded the Distinguished Large Section award of Region 10 during 2009, Kerala Section has continued its saga of multifaceted growth in 2010 and 2011 as well. This poster will highlight some of the Section activities, including:
Program of (Local) Distinguished Lecturers (PDL)

The objective of the PDL is to provide a menu of potential lecturers to facilitate and promote the organization of events by members. Proposals are considered by each Chapter, including name and affiliation of IEEE volunteer, subject and format of lecture, and time availability. The PDL was proposed and working mechanisms approved by Argentina Section mid-2010, and since then, we have had 14 nominations from eight Chapters, which have already produced three events. We are confident with the growth potential of the PDL within our borders and extending to neighbor Sections. The idea was, from the beginning, “to export the idea” in order to create a regional program, thus sharing simultaneoulsy the advantage of language and geographical proximity.
Region 2 GOLD Activities
Presented by Michael Pearce, Region 2
Comprised of 20 Sections and 2,852 GOLD members as of 2010, Region 2 GOLD members span the Northeastern region of the United States, including Erie, Johnstown, Pittsburgh, West Virginia...through to Lima and Youngstown. With eight active GOLD Affinity Groups (AGs), the team has continued to engage members in specific and targeted events. In 2010, the various GOLD teams continued member engagement through strategic activities including team events, student conferences, camping trips, collaborative events, joint science festivals, STEP events, and many more. The strategic plan for the year 2011-2012 includes continuous engagement with student members, being a valuable platform and resource for students as they transition from undergraduates to the professional world. A major goal of the Region 2 GOLD team includes instituting AGs in Sections that have such concerns.
Society Collaborations in the Dallas Area

This poster illustrates how diverse Societies can collaborate to provide the most benefits to their members. The diversity within the Societies reflects the diverse applications for technologies and demonstrates how technologies can be shared within the Societies. This poster will demonstrate how reliability professionals can join each other and reap the benefits from collaborating Societies, regardless of the specialty. While integration of IEEE Dallas local Societies can be done with a variety of tools, the Society Chairs collaboration concept has not been widely considered. The ability to integrate these Societies improves efficiency and provides members and leaders with the opportunity to expand the scope of their Society influence to encourage volunteer engagement.
Building Collaboration: IEEE Industry Day as a Catalyst for your Community

IEEE serves as a catalyst to promote interactions between industry, academic, government, research labs, and entrepreneurs. In 2010, three IEEE Sections (Boston, New Hampshire, and Maine) and the Region 1 Industry Committee worked together to create such a forum in a one-day workshop. In this poster, we describe the steps to creating a successful event that can energize your community. Elements include: development of a partnership model for IEEE Region, Section, and local partners; building a team of organizers; seeking insight for the program elements; hosting a world café for conversations that matter to your attendees; enabling space for informal workshops; and attracting key speakers to set the stage for dialogue. As a result of this work, new connections are formed across the community, and IEEE leaders benefit from the opportunities for closer feedback and engagement. The Industry Day event was first presented in the Region 1 Southern Area, and following this second successful result in the Region 1 Northeast Area, it is now planned to be held as an annual event. It has also motivated industry days in other Regions, such as the upcoming IEEE India Industry Day in Region 10. Join us to learn how this model could work for your Section.
Encouraging Women Scientists & Engineers - Introduction of IEEE Japan Council Women in Engineering Affinity Group

Although gender-equality has become crucial for advancement of society, the participation of women is still poor, particularly in the area of science and technology. To promote gender equality, it is important to enhance womens’ networking, foster technical skills, and encourage girls' mindsets to aspire to be engineers. The IEEE Japan Council Women in Engineering Affinity Group (JC WIE) has promoted lectures, panel discussions, and congresses to introduce distinguished role models, share issues on womens’ career developments, and discuss solutions with women engineers in Region 10 countries. In 2010, JC WIE organized the panel discussions at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2010 Women Leaders Network Meeting, and the WIE technical sessions at the IEEE Region 10 Conference 2010 (TENCON 2010). Through our activities, we have been highly-praised both at home and abroad. This poster presents our activities as the best practices of WIE operations in Japan.
Engineering Sustainable Solutions for Social Benefit

IEEE’s revised core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. The current problems facing the world; be it global warming or social unrest or economic meltdown or natural calamities, call for actions from all angles. The technologies that are being developed should address such issues as global warming, terrorism, corruption, poverty, pollution, illiteracy, migration of people congesting the urban areas… One of the challenges is to identify such technologies and engineer them into useful and sustainable applications. It is the intent of this poster to highlight how socially beneficial solutions may be engineered for the benefit of humanity by sharing some experiences. Active volunteers can puruse these activities and run them in their respective constituencies for social good.
IEEE-Canada HIC: Bringing Humanitarian Projects to a Section Near You

IEEE has stepped-up its efforts in humanitarian projects, seeking to be "universally recognized for the contributions of technology and of technical professionals in improving global conditions.” Some of these initiatives include the Humanitarian Technology Challenge (HTC); the President’s Change the World competition; and the IEEE Power & Energy Society’s Community Solutions Initiative (CSI). This poster will present how Region 7 (Canada) has established a standing Humanitarian Initiatives Committee (HIC) to bring humanitarian project opportunities to members at the Section level; an approach that leverages best practices from various recent IEEE initiatives, as well as original strategies developed by this committee.
IEEE Foundation Project at the Bradbury Science Museum
Presented by Tom Tierney, Los Alamos Northern New Mexico (LANNM) SectionThe IEEE Los Alamos Northern New Mexico Section obtained an IEEE Foundation Grant for US$27k, along with a US$100k grant from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, to jointly create a supercomputing exhibit. The Section involved several undergraduate students who connected with leading scientists to produce a cutting edge set of museum panels that discuss the history and state-of-the-art in supercomputing. The exhibit is now on display at the Bradbury Science Museum. This poster will discuss the process the LANNM Section used to obtain the funding and the outcome of the IEEE Foundation project.
Providing K-12 STEM Education through Radio Astronomy Using the Small Radio Telescope

The IEEE Daytona Section has successfully deployed a Small Radio Telescope with globally available remote access for use in K-12 education, and is currently developing educational materials to assist teachers and parents in using this tool to enhance existing science curricula, as well as to increase their awareness of the purpose of engineering and technology in the pursuit of scientific knowledge. The process of constructing, deploying, and testing the hardware instrument itself is used as an educational tool for the engineering process. The development of remote access provides a case study in incorporating global education in otherwise local projects, making a local effort a resource for the global community of educators and engineers.
