IEEE is divided into ten geographic regions worldwide. Within those regions are more than 330 local sections and over 1,700 technical chapters that unite local members with similar technical interests.

IEEE Member and Geographic Activities

IEEE Member and Geographic Activities provide unique opportunities to attend technical presentations, create strong peer-to-peer connections, and participate in leadership opportunities that can make a positive distinction in IEEE members' jobs and careers.

Activities take place on a local level through the development and maintenance of Geographical Organizational Units: Regions, Sections, Technical Chapters, Affinity Groups, and Student Branches.

Member and Geographic Activities are volunteer-driven by members and the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGA Board).

2010 MGA Challenge Results

Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) would like to thank everyone for their interest and enthusiasm toward this year’s MGA Challenge, especially those of you who took the time to submit very compelling and thoughtful proposals.
MGA staff received received 54 proposals from all over the globe covering numerous topics including:
  • Professional Development and Career Services
  • Information Management & Technology Solutions
  • Member Engagement & Retention
  • Member Recruitment & Benefits
  • Networking
  •  Industry Relations
  • Pre-University Program
  • Public Relations
After careful evaluation, we have chosen 4 projects for implementation in 2010. They cover nearly all of the topic areas you told us were important to you. They are:
Coordinated Industry Contact & Employment Assistance Program
Submitters:  Bill Harrison, Lee Stogner, Ed Kirchner
This pilot program will train volunteers in delivering employment assistance and career development services through companies that employ IEEE members.  IEEE-USA and MGA will work in close cooperation to inform extensions and expansions of the pilot to Regions 1-10, with the customization of materials to a local geographic focus for Regions 7-10.
MyMobile IEEE
Submitter: Kim W. Tracy
MyMobileIEEE will develop mobile applications for IEEE members. These mobile applications will focus on better connecting members to IEEE products and services where ever they are.
IEEE Promotional Video Vignettes
Submitters: Martin Buehler, Tim Schoenfelder
This project will produce a series of 5-10 minute videos concentrating on topical areas of interest to members throughout their various lifecycles (die, students, GOLD, members, senior members, life members, WIE, etc.) Individual video vignettes will be consolidated in longer videos and made available for local meetings around the world to help explain the benefits of IEEE membership to both members and prospective members
IEEE Day
Submitter: Salima Kaissi
IEEE Day will be a global event held on the 7-8 October 2010, in recognition of IEEE members--past, present, and future--on the anniversary of the first time IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884. IEEE organizational units (regions, sections, chapters, affinity groups, student branches, etc.) will be encouraged to participate by providing local events for their members and encouraging the use of social networking to communicate members’ technological interests and successes.
Plans for these four projects are under way. MGA will be working closely with each of the submitters to help them achieve their goals for 2010. These pilot projects will produce member services and benefits that will be rolled out to IEEE Geographic Units around the globe in the future.
Please keep watching our Web site for new information regarding these efforts and congratulations to all our winners.

The MGA Leadership Training Initiative Ad Hoc Committee is proud to announce the release of the Quick Start Training (for Geographic Unit Leaders), a new training program designed for geographic unit officers in their first 30 days in office. Quick Start Training was developed to help new officers more quickly understand the roles and responsibilities of their positions and begin the process of member engagement.

The release of the Quick Start Training acknowledges our section leaders' highest priorities as voted on at Sections Congress 2008 in Quebec City.  Please refer to Sections Congress Recommendation #3.

Society technical chapters

A chapter is the technical subunit of one or more IEEE sections.  Society chapters are your local link to the valuable resources available from IEEE and its 39 technical societies.  Chapter activities may include guest speakers, workshops, and seminars, as well as social functions.  Chapters provide society members with valuable opportunities to network at a local level - enabling both personal and professional growth.
