This page gives an overview of IEEE Islands in Second Life, including building names and descriptions, and locations. IEEE Islands in Second Life is divided into two sections: the North Side and the South Side. While major IEEE buildings are located in the North Side, the South Side is dedicated to IEEE volunteer activities and experimentation.
Current buildings on the North Side of the island (formerly known as Island 1) reflect the structure of IEEE web site's content. The default landing spot is Central Plaza, which contains a variety of information for new and repeat visitors, announcements and news, and a few small meeting rooms and theaters. Major buildings radiate off the plaza, including Membership, Societies, Publications, Standards, Education & Careers, corporate information, and Meetings & Conferences. In addition, a new auditorium has been completed, as well as a high-capacity outdoor Lecture Center.
The IEEE Media Center, which will host mostly video content from various IEEE sources, is under construction. On the drawing board is the IEEE Center for Virtual Environments, which will host content relating to virtual environments, virtual and augmented reality, simulations, and serious games, as well as spaces for IEEE activities involved in these areas. The Emerging Technologies Center will be constructed adjacent to the Standards Campus and will showcase various IEEE activities in cutting-edge technologies.
Below are some examples of buildings found in the North Side of the island.

The South Side of the island (IEEE 2) is devoted to IEEE volunteer activities and experimentation. Several groups are active and have parcels of their own. The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society recently moved into its new headquarters on the Island and meetings and classes are regularly held in the Artificial Intelligence Learning Center. In addition, the new IEEE Sandbox on the South Side of the Island is regularly used by the general public as a place to experiment.
