President Peter Clout is founder and president of Vista Control Systems, a Los Alamos National Laboratory spinoff that sells software for collecting, displaying and storing real time data. Prior to founding Vista, he developed a control system for particle accelerators and developed data acquisition systems at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Hamburg, Germany and at Daresbury Laboratory in Northern England. He has worked on standards for CAMAC hardware and software. Peter has degrees in physics from University College, London (BSc) and the University of York (DPhil). He spent some time computer programming prior to entering University College London. His primary career path has been computers and the electronics associated with real time systems both for research and for applications in industry and government. IEEE Activities – (SM’85) COMMITTEES/BOARD: IEEE Service Award Committee, 2008-09. IEEE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award Selection Committee, 2009. Technical Activities Board (TAB): Society Review Committee: Member, 2009; Chair, 2002-03; TAB Strategic Planning Committee, 1999-2003; TAB Awards Committee, NPS Representative, 1999-2000; TAB Nominating Committee, 1996-97; TAB Meetings Council, 1996; TAB, Board Member, 1995-96; TAB Public Relations Committee, NPS Representative, 1994-96; TAB Awards Committee, 1993-94. SOCIETY: Nuclear Plasma Sciences Society (NPS): Past President, 1997-98; President, 1995-96; Vice President, 1994; AdCom, Elected Member, 1993-96, 1987-90; AdCom Secretary, 1992-94, 1990; Computer Applications Technical Committee, 1984-2006; Communications Committee, Chair, 2001-09; Constitution Review Committee, 2005-07, 2000; Awards Committee: Chair, 1999-2000; Member, 1995-96; Nominations Committee: Past Chair, 1999-2000; Chair, 1997-98; Particle Accelerator Technical Committee, 1986-94. CONFERENCE: Particle Accelerator Conference, Program Committee, 1987. AWARDS: NPS Computer Applications In Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Award, 2007. NPS Shea Award, 2002. IEEE Accomplishments – Served as President of NPSS from 1995 to 1996, managing it through a difficult financial period. Encouraged significant NPSS support for the Coalition for Plasma Science to educate Congress and the public on the importance of plasmas. Completed promptly meeting minutes as Secretary of NPSS between 1990 and 1994 to ensure that members had timely information. Created, produced, and shipped to members and all NPSS conferences since 1998, membership brochures and leaflets about NPSS and IEEE activities for membership development and to publicize NPSS. All brochures are freshly created and printed every two years. Distributed a membership booth and arranged IEEE membership materials distribution to all NPSS conferences resulting in membership holding steady during a period of declining participation in many societies. In addition NPS conferences and journals have expanded significantly. Regenerated nuclear power sessions at the annual Nuclear Science Symposium with a small informal NPSS committee, because there are no other IEEE venues for presentation and publication of technical work on reactor electronics and radiation detectors. Cleared a 2½ year work backlog as 2002-03 Chair of TAB Society Review Committee, for which the Technical Activities Board passed a motion of thanks. Currently serves as a member of the committee. Statement – For professional development there can be nothing better than a volunteer driven professional organization like the IEEE. I have volunteered for IEEE duties because I believe that making all conferences and meetings more successful, increasing educational opportunities and improving publications is a benefit not only to our members’ professional growth but to everyone in our professional communities. As a consequence, members will be more secure and productive in their jobs, and conference attendance, readership of publications and membership will continue to grow to benefit technology and economic development. I ask for your vote so that I can continue my work, now in collaboration with the society presidents and volunteers in Division IV as a team to efficiently further improve the value of your IEEE and Society membership. I will ensure that actions of the IEEE Board are in the best interests of you, members of societies in Division IV, and the IEEE. Please check my web site, www.peterclout.com and vote for me today. |

IEEE Accomplishments – Since joining IEEE I have consciously toiled to contribute at all IEEE tiers, chapters to Societies and beyond, consistently focusing on adding value to members and Society. My activities have been cross-cutting: Membership, Conferences, Technical and Educational. Nobody accomplishes anything alone and I gratefullyacknowledge the excellent cooperation of fellow volunteers. With that proviso, I am proud of my accomplishments:
I am honored to have been recognized for my leadership roles within IEEE. Of the many awards received I wish to highlight:
Statement – IEEE faces technological and social challenges, while considering the need for globalization to achieve its mission. As a global organization, IEEE must reach out to professionals throughout the world. Complexity of technology requires synergy between technical areas and cooperation between professionals around the Globe, can be enhanced by IEEE, particularly through collaboration between societies. My position tagline is "Benefit from Diversity." As Division Delegate/Director, I will focus on encouraging and facilitating communication between Societies, and between Societies to IEEE BoD, TAB, MGAB and other IEEE entities. Societies/Councils can identify mutual fields of interest in emerging technologies and cooperate in their development. Societies CAN collaborate in implementing cost-effective processes for increasing membership and generating revenue, for instance, through joint conferences and membership initiatives. Often DRIVE is all that is required. As Division Delegate/Director I will work with Society Presidents, sharing knowledge and encouraging cooperation in technical, membership and social activities. I will serve as mentor to the Division IV Societies/Councils Presidents and assist in developing paths of cooperation for the benefit of societies, members and IEEE. |
