Alfred O. Hero III received the B.S. (summa cum laude) from Boston University (1980) and the Ph.D. from Princeton University (1984), both in Electrical Engineering. Since 1984 he has been with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and, by courtesy, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Statistics.  His recent research interests have been in areas including: inference for sensor networks, adaptive sensing, bioinformatics, inverse problems, and statistical signal and image processing. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, the American Statistical Association (ASA), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and the US National Commission (Commission C) of the International Union of Radio Science (URSII).

IEEE Accomplishments – While President of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, Alfred Hero spearheaded the recent Connexions/Signal Processing Society electronic open access initiative. This initiative is one of the first open access projects undertaken by the IEEE and is an ambitious effort to launch a new vehicle for delivering certified quality educational content to the educational, scientific, and engineering communities.

Statement – The IEEE is in a position to take a leadership role in providing new opportunities for publishing, conferencing, and networking in open access electronic media. If elected I will vigorously pursue such opportunities and advocate global outreach as a way of growing and maintaining impact of IEEE on society and the profession.

Dr. Thomas F. Wiener is an Aerospace Engineer with over 40 years of increasing responsibility in conducting and directing high technology research and development efforts. Now the Principal of the Forté Consultancy, he was a Program Manager in the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for ten years. He served in the U.S. Navy for over 22 years, qualified in Destroyers and in Submarines. He commanded the nuclear attack submarine USS JACK. His special technical proficiencies span the fields of missile technology, inertial guidance and automatic control, imaging and non-imaging sensors, and C3I. He has acquired substantial expertise in training and education in the Navy and in civilian life.

Sc.B. (Engineering), Brown University; Sc.D. (Instrumentation), M.I.T. His dissertation, the first substantial work on strapdown inertial guidance, was the basis for the Apollo Guidance System.

IEEE Accomplishments – As President of the Oceanic Engineering Society: initiated the “Two OCEANS” program, conducting one OCEANS Conference annually in the Americas, and a second one in Region 8 or Region 10 in alternate years.

Active in the establishment of the Sensors Council: first Secretary-Treasurer (1999-2002); President (2004-2005).

As Chair, TAB Society Review Committee (2004-2007); revitalized the committee and thereby encouraged Societies, Councils, and Committees to conduct thorough and effective reviews of their activities.

Initiated formation of the IEEE Committee on Earth Observation to provide a mechanism for the IEEE to participate in the Group on Earth Observation and to contribute to the development of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems.

Statement – As your Division Delegate/Director I will bring clear statements of concerns and considerations of IEEE Societies and Councils to ensure the Board makes wise decisions.

The IEEE is committed to enabling technical professionals to bring to bear their technical expertise and vigor to solving the most significant problems of our day. I will work with our Societies and all members of the IEEE Community to engage in IEEE’s exciting new direction.

Division Delegates/Directors must reach out to Regional Directors to bring together the two parents of our Chapters, the Society and the Section.

I pledge:

  • To support the aims of the IEEE by bringing forward the concerns and considerations of the Societies and Councils
  • To work with you to promote your objectives
  • To work with our Region Directors to support effective, vibrant Chapters
  • To work with you to make IEEE’s contributions effective in solving the world’s problems
