IEEE Accomplishments – During 20 years of IEEE membership, I have held many leadership positions. I have contributed to conferences, publications, standards, membership, sections, and chapters.

As an IEEE volunteer I have had the opportunity to be active within both of IEEE’s two major boards (TAB and RAB).  I have been an active member within IAS PCIC (1994) and now serve as the Education Department Chairman.  Since 1999, I have actively volunteered on the Houston Section Executive Committee as Chairman in 2001-2002 and again in 2006.  I have also had the opportunity to serve in numerous capacities on the Region 5 ExCom since 2002 and other IEEE board positions since 2004.  I have been active in Standards for many years and chair of P1714.  I have (co)authored over twenty papers within the IEEE and other professional organizations and have been a frequent invited presenter.

My leadership involvement within the Houston Section, Region 5 and IAS PCIC has contributed to increased value to the individual member.  This, along with a successful track record of building consensus on technical, professional, educational, and organizational issues, provides me with a unique perspective and the ability to achieve the goals and objectives necessary to lead Region 5.

Statement – The IEEE is the preeminent Professional Society in the World with members representing most countries.  Within Region 5 we have many dedicated volunteers who spend countless time providing support to members.  Members are the lifeblood of the IEEE, yet too often our leadership pursues directives and forgets to ask a fundamental question: Does this add value to the members?

During my tenure within the Houston Section, IAS Board and EAB, I have made “ adding value to membership ” my central theme.  As your Region 5 Delegate-Elect/Director-Elect, that will be the driving force behind my goals and objectives.

I believe that building consensus is the only way to achieve common objectives and accomplish our goals.  I have been a committed IEEE volunteer for most of my twenty year membership.  This provides a unique perspective on the opportunities within the IEEE due to this experience within TAB, RAB, EAB and Standards.  Through this wide berth of experience I can represent you the member on the IEEE Board of Directors and ensure that we “ add value to your membership ”.

I have served on the Audit Committee recently at the time of many entities moving to concentration banking and the installation of more comprehensive monitoring of monetary accounts.  This has resulted in better financial practices throughout IEEE.

While a member of the Educational Activities Board, I have concentrated on pre-university activities and the development of new Expert Now modules which benefit all members through on-line continuing education.

Statement – Previous IEEE experience at the Section, Chapter, Society, Conference, Region, and Institute levels will enable me to serve as an effective member of the Board of Directors.  I have direct experience with regional activities, technical activities, publications and products, educational activities, student branches, and the Board of Directors.   If elected, I will focus on:

  • supporting the expansion of activities for all Region 5 sections
  • adding more IEEE services for the direct benefit of all members
  • increasing the number of active members and providing greater recognition of section leaders
  • enhancing the image of engineering as seen by the general public and promoting career opportunities to students
  • expanding the cooperative efforts between Region 5 and other regions as well as with the technical entities within IEEE
  • assuring the financial viability of both the Institute and the sections
I will try to increase interaction between our sections through communication and enhanced awareness of each other’s programs and practices.  If elected, I will do my best to represent you and your section.

Statement – We have a vibrant Region, with the potential to be even better. We need to gain new members and retain the ones we have. By providing the services our members need, and encouraging more of our members to be actively involved, we can achieve high expectations.

We must utilize technology to ensure our Section leaders are properly trained, and our Area Chairs must keep a finger on the pulse of each Section in their area in order to best meet the needs of their area. With proper communication and focus, all Sections will become stronger and more effective.

It is the job of the leadership to help our members find their niche in IEEE. Whether serving as volunteers in government relations, career guidance efforts, or planning seminars, there is a place for everyone to grow professionally and become a part of our success.

In order to move the Region forward, we must all work together to achieve our strategic vision and mission. I look forward to serving the Region as Delegate-Elect/Director-Elect in 2007-2008.
