Humanitarian Technology Challenge Conference Draws Support

24 August – The initial Humanitarian Technology Challenge Conference, held 1-2 June 2009 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, launched the solution development process for three humanitarian challenges that can be addressed through technology, including reliable electricity; data connectivity of rural district health offices; and individual ID tied to health records.

The Humanitarian Technology Challenge is a joint project between the IEEE and the United Nations Foundation, a nonprofit humanitarian organization. The project objective is to create sustainable technology solutions to pressing humanitarian needs that can be implemented locally, within the economic and environmental conditions where they will be deployed.

The June conference was attended by 153 humanitarian and technology representatives, 40 percent from outside the United States. By the conclusion of the conference, working groups were established to collaborate, both in-person and via web, in developing open-source-like technological solutions called "collaborative crowdsourcing." IEEE members, other technologists, humanitarians, corporate representatives, philanthropic foundations, academicians, and students are participating in the solution process. Work will continue through the use of an on-line collaboration tool, and periodic conference calls and workshops. The solutions development process will continue into 2010, with product development and piloting expected in 2011 and 2012.
