Section 9 - Activities of IEEE Organizational Units

9.16  Metric Policy

All IEEE Organizational Units shall:

  1. Actively support the use of the International System of Units (Le Systeme International d'Units, or SI), the modernized metric system.

  2. Follow SI-based metric practice as detailed in IEEE/ASTM SI 10, Standard for Use of the International System of Units (SI): The Modern Metric System, to express measured and calculated values of quantity in all IEEE publications, including standards.

  3. Promote the understanding and use of SI in education at all levels, both within the profession and in society at large.

Necessary exceptions to this policy, such as where a conflicting world industry practice exists, must be evaluated on an individual basis and approved by the responsible Major Board of the IEEE for a specific period of time. The cognizant Board responsible for the publication or activity will be responsible for monitoring compliance.
