Standards Education Workshop

Experts Discuss the History and Development of IEEE 802 WLAN, WPAN, and WMAN Standards and Reflect on the impact of 802 Standards on Society.



This content-rich workshop will focus primarily on the approved standards within the IEEE 802.11 WLAN, 802.15 WPAN, and 802.16 WMAN working groups, but will also introduce participants to the current work going on within all 802 working groups.

The workshop will kick off with a Panel Session, moderated by Paul Nikolich, Chair of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, and will include the following participants:

  • John R. Barr, Director, Standards Realization, Motorola
  • Roger B. Marks, Senior Vice President, NextWave Broadband Inc., and  Chairman, IEEE 802.16
  • Fanny Mlinarsky, President, octoScope
  • Albert Petrick, Principal, Jones-Petrick and Associates, and Vice Chairman, IEEE 802.11
  • Donald E. Purcell, Chairman, Center for Global Standards Analysis

The panel discussion will cover:

1) An overview and history of the family of 802 standards, how and where they overlap or don’t

  • Discussion of MAC/PHY layers

2) What 802 looks like today

  • Number of participants, where they come from, and why they come to 802 to do their work

3) Panelists will describe the standards their groups have developed,  the process by which they got there, and reflect on how the work done has and will impact society

This is the perfect opportunity to meet and interact with some members of the IEEE 802 leadership and to tap into their expertise as work continues developing industry relevant IEEE standards.
