Educational Activities Overview

The IEEE Educational Activities Board is responsible for coordinating the educational activities of the IEEE. The volunteer and staff members of IEEE Educational Activities carry out this responsibility by developing educational programs to ensure (1) The technological literacy of pre-college students, (2) the continuous maintenance and improvement of engineering education programs through active participation in accreditation activities, and (3) the development of continuing education products and services that serve the professional development and lifelong learning needs of electro-techology professionals worldwide.

IEEE Education Activities coordinates pre-college education programs for the IEEE and serves as liaison to other associations and teacher organizations with interests in pre-university education. For educators and engineers, PEERS (Pre-College Educator and Engineer Resource Site) is a resource site that provides information for collaborations and success stories of engineers in classrooms. Online documentation for IEEE Sections' Teacher-In Service Program provides a handy how-to start pre-college teacher training with engineering projects. Other volunteer opportunities are detailed at FIRST, IEE Faraday Lecture, projects and links, and students' frequently asked questions.

A major responsibility of the IEEE is participation in the process of accreditation of engineering and engineering technology programs at colleges and universities in the United States. IEEE Educational Activities is responsible for all activities pertaining to engineering and engineering technology accreditation and for interaction with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc., (ABET). ABET is solely recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit programs in engineering, engineering technology and engineering-related programs at U.S. colleges and universities. In addition, IEEE Educational Activities assists other organizations worldwide with the establishment and review of academic program accreditation processes.

The IEEE Education Partners Program enables IEEE members to easily continue their education. The Program provides a diversified array of courses and products at a discount from select corporate and university partners.

IEEE Online Learning Communities consist of groups of individuals who have a shared purpose and a common interest. These Communities provide you with a forum to discuss vital issues in your technical area, the latest articles and papers, networking opportunities with others in your field, peer and expert advice to help you in your job, and so much more.

The IEEE is authorized to offer Continuing Education Units (CEU) by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). IEEE Educational Activities is responsible for assuring compliance with the IACET guidelines and maintains a CEU registry to recognize and track participation in IEEE short courses and tutorials.

The major educational issues currently being addressed by IEEE Educational Activities include revitalization of the accreditation process, global comparability of credentials and the design of electronic courseware to increase accessibility to education through the Web.
