The Volunteer Workshop training session will be hosted on 16  March 2007 for IEEE/ASCE/ASME members who are interested in helping their local schools, teachers and students be more technologically literate.

The session will inform engineers on effective strategies to build working relationships with schools and school systems, and will provide lesson plans and materials that can be used in the classroom. The program will initially lead to professional development program training sessions for local educators.

This workshop will provide you with the resources to aid teachers by leveraging the existing engineering knowledge and skills in your area towards improving teachers’ knowledge of engineering concepts.

The overall goals of the workshop are:

  • Empower engineering society “champions” to develop collaborations with their local pre-university education community to promote applied inquiry-based learning.
  • Enhance the level of technological literacy of pre-university educators.
  • Encourage pre-university students to pursue technical careers, including engineering.
  • Increase the general level of technological literacy of pre-university students for many years.
  • Increase the level of understanding of the needs of educators among the engineering community
  • Identify ways that engineers can assist education departments

The event will be held at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter in San Antonio, TX and will begin at 1:00 pm on Friday 16 March.  It will include hands-on presentations, a question and answer period, and discussion on numerous topics, including: background and scope of IEEE/ASCE/ASME, engineering activities and the alignment of these activities with education standards, connecting with your local pre-university community, and pre-university education resources.
