Since 2001, IEEE engineers have actively participated in City Technology, Stuff That Works, a series of five curriculum units including teacher guides and accompanying online forums for elementary and middle school teachers to use to introduce the world of technology and engineering to their students. City College of New York hosts a website that includes discussion forums dedicated to each group of teachers using the Stuff that Works curriculum units.
IEEE members serve as online advisors for these forums to clarify technical issues, to encourage students and teachers, and to provide background information about discoveries made by students and teachers. The forums provide ideal opportunities for IEEE members to share experiences from their professional lives so students can begin to understand how engineers go about their work. Often the online discussion forums are the first contact the teachers and students have with a member of the engineering profession. City Technology: Stuff That Works is funded in part by the National Science Foundation with additional support from the City College of New York and from the IEEE.
