31 March 2009 – Deadline for submission of Officer, Meeting and Financial Reports

In order to maintain viability and to ensure that all geographic units are meeting the needs of their members, each unit is required to submit annual reports for the following items:

  • Meeting activity – The minimum meeting requirements are 5 meetings for Sections and Subsections; 2 technical meetings for Chapters; 2 meetings for Affinity Groups. This information can be submitted online via the electronic L31 meeting report form.
  • Current officers – Please use the online officer report form to report your new officers within your geographic unit via the online reporting form.
  • Financial activity – Each Region, Section and Geographic Council Treasurer is responsible for submitting both the bank account disclosure form and the 2008 financial report for their unit and any subunits (Subsection, Chapters and/or Affinity Groups) to IEEE as soon as possible, but not later than 31 March 2009. The 2009 Geographic Unit Financial Report and instructions are available online.

Rebates are paid based on the Section's eligibility, as determined in part by reporting and upon approval of all submitted reports. The Section Secretary and Treasurer or Secretary/Treasurer should verify that all required reports are submitted. Unless these reports, including all Subsection, Chapter and Affinity Group meeting activity reports, are received by 31 March 2009, the Section (or Geographic Council) may not receive the current annual rebate payment. For questions regarding officer reporting, please contact MGA Staff.

IEEE Names E. James Prendergast Executive Director

Dr. E. James (Jim) Prendergast will assume the role of IEEE Executive Director on 6 April 2009. Dr. Prendergast will serve as chief operating officer and will manage the more than 1,000 IEEE staff members at seven U.S. and overseas locations. Prendergast’s appointment comes after a nearly eight-month search by IEEE’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Prendergast most recently served as vice president and chief technology officer for DuPont Electronic and Communication Technologies in Wilmington, Del. Prior to joining DuPont, he was vice president and director of Motorola’s Physical Sciences Research Laboratories, headquartered in Tempe, Ariz. A native Australian, Jim received his undergraduate degrees from the University of Sydney and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Cambridge.

Prendergast succeeds former IEEE Executive Director Jeffry W. Raynes, who resigned in June 2008.

Welcome – New Sections/Subsections

The IEEE MGA Board recently approved the formation of the following units:

  • IEEE Southwest Missouri Section in Region 5
  • IEEE Medellin Subsection of the Colombia Section in Region 9
  • IEEE Shandong Subsection of the Beijing Section in Region 10
  • IEEE Tasmania Subsection of the Victorian Section in Region 10

There are currently 330 Sections and 38 Subsections which are fulfilling the MGA mission by engaging the members locally in over 110 countries worldwide.

IEEE Membership Development Reports

If you are a new Section officers you should mae sure you get the IEEE Membership Development Reports. The Membership Development Reports are electronic newsletters published monthly on behalf of the IEEE Membership Development Committee and distributed to membership development officers in Regions, Sections and Societies as well as to other interested IEEE volunteers and staff. The reports provide monthly snapshots of IEEE membership, with statistical information and comparative analyses of the data. They also include articles on timely MD activities, updates on MD programs, and upcoming IEEE events. Access to these reports is restricted to active IEEE members and staff. An IEEE web account is required for access.

myIEEE 1.7 Redesigned Experience

myIEEE, the personalized web portal for IEEE members, has been redesigned showcasing a sleek new interface and user friendly design. This enhancement is the first in a series of changes initiated to extend and evolve myIEEE's feature functionality. myIEEE 1.7 includes usability improvements, streamlined alerts, member spotlights, Scitopia, Today’s Engineer, and IEEE.tv gadgets across the website. The newly added “Who’s Online” feature shows a list of all IEEE members currently logged in to myIEEE. Log-in today and see what all of the excitement is about. http://www.ieee.org/myieee.

IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society Sign Merger Agreement

IEEE signed a merger agreement with the honor society ETA Kappa Nu (HKN), a nonprofit, public-service organization comprising nearly 200 university chapters on 14 February 2009. The merger, which will go into effect by mid-2009 pending final approval, will make HKN the official honor society of IEEE, recognizing scholarship and academic excellence and identifying student leaders, young professionals and eminent scholars in the IEEE’s technical fields of interest.

Under the agreement, HKN will become an organizational unit of IEEE, governed by the new IEEE-HKN Board of Governors. A restricted endowment will be created in the IEEE Foundation to support HKN’s educational, societal, and recognition activities. In addition to holding HKN’s current assets, the new endowment will receive an initial donation of US$1.2M from IEEE. Read the full press release.

IEEE Launches Interactive Web Site to Highlight Members’ Humanitarian Projects

We are excited to announce a new Humanitarian Technology Network (HTN) – a platform that enables IEEE members to connect and collaborate with others doing similar humanitarian work, gain visibility and recognition for their efforts, and broadcast their needs for advice, funding or assistance from others. The ability to post articles in the HTN is an exclusive and valuable benefit of IEEE membership. Anyone can browse or view the HTN content, such as humanitarians, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), funders and others who may wish to partner or fund member humanitarian efforts.

The HTN is built on the same technology as the successful IEEE Global History Network. The platform accommodates multi-media descriptions – including text, photographs, diagrams, audio, video, as well as PowerPoint slide presentations.

The network is now open for IEEE member contributions. Visit http://www.ieeehtn.org today and make your humanitarian contributions more visible.

IEEE Celebrates its Two Millionth Article on IEEE Xplore – Free Article Download for IEEE members

IEEE celebrated the addition of the two millionth article to the IEEE Xplore digital library in March. This article, “Intelligent Packet Dropping for Optimal Energy-Delay Tradeoffs in Wireless Downlinks,” appears in the March issue of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, one of IEEE’s 142 journals and magazines. The author is IEEE Senior Member Michael J. Neely, assistant professor at the Communication Sciences Institute, part of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Neely’s article discusses how implementing an innovative algorithm into a wireless network can fundamentally change the efficiency of wireless transmitters, which would be beneficial in prolonging battery life without adversely affecting performance. To download a free copy of the article, visit http://www.ieee.org/go/2million through 10 April 2009.

The IEEE Xplore® digital library now offers more than 2 million documents in its database of high quality journal articles, conference proceedings, standards and educational courses. Serving seven million visitors each month, IEEE Xplore has grown over 275% since its inception ten years ago—with more than 100,000 documents added to the library each year.
