IEEE Annual Election: Remember to Vote

IEEE members are requested to participate in the annual IEEE elections.  This is your opportunity to provide input to determine who will serve on the IEEE Board of Directors, Member and Geographic Activities Board, Technical Activities Board, IEEE-USA Board, and Standards Association Board.  The ballots for the IEEE Annual Election have been mailed to all eligible IEEE voting members.  Please remind the members in your Geographic Unit to vote.  The IEEE Annual Election Web page has more information about the election and a link to access the ballot electronically.

IEEE Public Visibility Committee Finalizes New Positioning Statement

The IEEE Public Visibility Committee has finalized a positioning statement designed to provide a brief snapshot of IEEE and its global mission.  The positioning statement is part of the work of the Public Visibility Initiative which seeks to increase IEEE's visibility and create a global voice for the engineering profession.

The statement is one of several tools being developed to ensure that IEEE positioning is portrayed consistently across the association.  It should be integrated into marketing, public relations, and other promotional materials across the IEEE organization and should be kept in mind when developing any content that may describe IEEE (e.g., conference materials, speeches, bylined articles, content for IEEE Web sites, etc.).  It is suggested that you update your Section Web site with this statement.

Positioning Statement:
IEEE is the world’s largest professional association advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity.  IEEE and its members inspire a global community to innovate for a better tomorrow through its highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities.  IEEE is the trusted “voice” for engineering, computing, and technology information around the globe.

Humanitarian Technology Challenge Conference Draws Support

The initial Humanitarian Technology Challenge (HTC) Conference was held 1-2 June 2009, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, USA.  The Conference served to launch the Solution Development Process for three humanitarian challenges that could be addressed through technology:
  • Reliable Electricity - Availability of electric power for lighting and other electronic devices in resource-constrained environments.  Important for education, communications, and economic development.  To get involved, e-mail Butch Shadwell;
  • Data Connectivity of Rural District Health Offices - Capability of exchanging data among remote field offices and central health facilities.  Important for accessing treatment protocols, creating and monitoring health trends, and sharing results of treatments.  To get involved, e-mail Peter Spring;
  • Individual ID Tied to Health Records - Consistent availability of patient medical records.  Important for ongoing treatment of patients, especially migrants and those with long-term diseases.  To get involved, e-mail Rex Gantenbein.
The conference was attended by 153 humanitarian and technology representatives; forty percent were from outside the United States.  By the conclusion of the conference, working groups were established to collaborate, both in-person and via an online collaboration tool.  To participate in the Solution Development Process for a specific challenge, please e-mail the Solution Coordinator named above.  For more information, please visit the Humanitarian Technology Challenge Web page or e-mail the HTC team.

Panel of Conference Organizers (POCO) Available to Many First-Time Attendees

The 4th Annual Panel of Conference Organizers (POCO) took place in Prague, Czech Republic, on 16-18 July 2009.  The presentations covered a wide array of topics related to IEEE conference organizing, including departmental updates, how to promote a conference, the content capture program, and ensuring quality and integrity in the technical program.  This was the first time POCO was held in Region 8, and this new location made POCO available to many first-time attendees from regions previously unrepresented at POCO, including Belgium, Greece, Israel, Malta, Pakistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.  Presentations are available on the Panel of Conference Organizers (POCO) Web page.  For more information, please e-mail IEEE Conference Business Services.

IEEE Photonics Society Technical Chapters Updated in Geographic Roster

It was previously posted in SCOOP that the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS), a leading global society in the field of photonics, lasers, and electro-optics, has officially changed its name to the IEEE Photonics Society.  The Technical Chapters in the IEEE Geographic Roster have now been updated to reflect the name change.  As a reminder, if you haven't already done so, please update your Section and Chapter Web sites with this updated information.

Earthzine Subscription is Free and Features Articles on Earth Observation

Earthzine is a searchable, online environmental journal that features articles on Earth observation linked thematically to the nine societal benefit areas of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).  Featured articles discuss topics such as “Eradicating Hunger in Eastern Kenya” and “Education Around Earth.”  There are also opportunities to volunteer and contribute.  Sponsored by the IEEE Committee on Earth Observation (ICEO), Earthzine is also actively supporting John Vig’s President’s Sustainability Initiative with articles and a new essay contest for undergraduate and graduate students, titled Sustainability through Earth Observation and Engineering, with the dual themes of social equity and environmental protection.  A subscription to Earthzine is free.  Just click the Free Subscription button on the Earthzine Web page.
