MGA SCOOP - July 2009

A Newsletter for IEEE Geographic Unit Volunteers

2008 MGA Outstanding Large and Small Section Award Recipients

Congratulations to the IEEE Taipei Section (R10) for being chosen as the recipient of the 2008 MGA Outstanding Large Section Award and the IEEE Richland Section (R6) for being chosen as the recipient of the 2008 MGA Outstanding Small Section Award.  The Taipei and Richland Sections were chosen “For successful efforts in fulfilling the educational and scientific goals of IEEE for the benefit of the public by maintaining, enhancing, and supporting the Student Branches, Technical Chapters, and Affinity Groups within their geographic boundaries.”  The MGA Awards and Recognition Committee and the MGA Board were impressed by the quality of the nominations submitted and congratulate all Sections that submitted nominations for these awards.

The Officers of this year's Outstanding Sections, as well as the Section names of the previous award recipients are listed on the MGA Outstanding Section Awards web page.  This year, we have also added a section to the web page highlighting some of the 2008 calendar year activities of the recipients and nominees.

Learn more about the Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Awards Program, and complete an Online Award Nomination Form to help recognize the efforts of outstanding volunteers in your area.

Last Chance to Submit Nominations for MGA Treasurer and MGA Vice Chair Positions

The MGA Nominations and Appointments (N&A) Committee is soliciting nominations for the 2010 MGA Treasurer and 2010 MGA Vice Chair positions.  The deadline for these nominations is 20 July 2009.  Please review the list of available 2010 MGA positions (with position descriptions and deadlines) and complete the online Nomination Form for yourself or someone else.

In accordance with the IEEE globalization initiative and in an attempt to ensure that MGA is globally balanced, each Region is requested to submit nominations.  The Region Nominating Committee might consider members or past members who are familiar with Region affairs and gave excellent service.   Individuals nominated for MGA positions should have the common characteristics and common skills noted at the bottom of the nomination form.

Thank you for your efforts in supporting the MGA Vision to “Ensure Quality Member Opportunities through Continuous Engagement.”  Please e-mail the MGA N&A Committee with any questions.

IEEE Contact Center is Available to Serve Members in Regions 8 and 10

The IEEE Contact Center has expanded its hours of service.  The staff is available to respond to member inquiries 24 hours a day, five days a week, from 4:30pm ET (20:30 UTC) Sunday through 5:00pm ET (21:00 UTC) Friday.  The expanded service hours were instituted in response to member requests and will meet the needs of members in Region 8 (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) and Region 10 (Asia and Pacific).

“The IEEE Contact Center provides service based on a full view of the member and his or her experiences throughout the IEEE membership life cycle,” explains Marianne Schmidt, the Contact Center Director.  “We help members become more engaged in IEEE by being available when they need us and by raising their awareness of IEEE’s events, products, services, and opportunities.”

IEEE Merchandise Collection

Be one of the many current IEEE members who proudly display the IEEE logo.  The IEEE Merchandise Collection has over 25 items for purchase featuring the IEEE logo, including jackets, t-shirts, golf shirts, women’s apparel, hats, gifts, and eCertificates.  Specific items are also available highlighting the IEEE’s 125th Anniversary logo.

Order one or order many for deeper volume discounts.  New items are added to the collection every six months, and custom order requests can be arranged to display your Society or Section logo on any of the items in the collection.

Call for Volunteers: Student Branch Chapter and Student Development Initiative

The Computer Society and MGA have teamed up to build a stronger student membership in the fields of Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT).  Assistance is needed from the IEEE Sections for this effort.  Here’s how you can help.  Take a look at universities/colleges in your area that may have CS or IT programs.  Is there an IEEE Student Branch at this location?  Is the Student Branch in an Engineering school?  It has been found that in certain instances where this is the setup, the CS and IT students are being underserved due usually to being physically separated on campus.  If this is the case, would you please consider starting a new or second Student Branch at the school?  If you cannot find an IEEE member faculty at the school willing to support the Branch, a second Branch can be directly established by the Section.  The target for the creation of these new second Branches is August or September of this year.

Please e-mail Nick Lehotzky if there are opportunities to form new Student Branches and Student Branch Chapters in your area.  Support will be provided to get you started and throughout the process, and several tools will be at your disposal.  The global IEEE Xtreme 24 Hour Programming Challenge starts on 24 October.  Also, the Computer Society and MGA will be offering a special discounted student membership (US$40) to CS and IT students, any interested new student members, and all renewing student members for 2010.  Thank you in advance for your support.
